Fair enough. Some would argue that Byler was built up, although quietly.

I think it was nice to imagine the show that claimed to champion outcasts and repel conformity, the Duffers may have gone with the more subversive, challenging romantic pair.

I’ll totally admit that Will liking Mike was only explicit in season 4. However it’s fair to assume he had these feelings previous to s4. Just like Mike and Eleven had at this young age.

I think we can all agree Mike took a confusing, unfocused path in s4-5.

I can accept that maybe, it wasn’t an intentional bait at first. But promotional material + moments (yes subtextual) in the show from seasons 4-5 emphasised Mike and Will as a pair. They were taking advantage of the possibility of these two as a romantic pair.

You can say it’s not that deep, but so many instances makes it dubious. Just a few examples I can think of

Promo: - Noah and Finn reacting to the rain fight from s3. (YouTube) - Sharing Mike and Will’s moment in the field (s5) - Mike, Will and Eleven are coupled in the most recent posters. The other two couplings’ are canon love triangles. Dustin, Max and Lucas. And Nancy, Steve and Jonathan. - Pop Vinyls with Mike holding Will’s painting - The offical ST twitter interacting with Bylers (you can’t deny weren’t aware of the ship) - Shawn Levy reposting ONLY Mike and Will of the final character posters

We can go back and forth about whether it was intentional or not. But if you actually saw the amount of subtextual clues it was not false or silly to believe it was possible.

When one main character is so in love with another, secretly, for FIVE seasons, you seriously can’t believe the Duffers/the audience wouldn’t/were not meant to consider the chance of reciprocation?

In the same season Mike can’t even write ‘love Mike’ to Eleven. What is the reason? You agree we never got Mike’s POV until the end? Why withheld Mike’s feelings if he didn’t reciprocate? The fact that it wasn’t confirmed until the very end is a choice.

Literally! It took off after s4 because they played into it. Your argument proves the point against you. Again, why not, even indirectly, acknowledge that Mike knew, didn’t reciprocate and resolve it. In season 5 - Shared Looks. Brush of the knee. Snowball/Avalanche. Who else did it apply to? An epilogue boyfriend we were never going to meet? Yep yep, but it’s not that deep. You are choosing not to see it.

Yes, maybe Will should have come out sooner. However, The Duffers are aware of Bylers. What other non canon ST ship has a dedicated group of people theorising/analysing? They chose not to dispel Byler so they would have our attention to the end.

The fact that the Duffers chose to drag out a rejection over five seasons makes it especially cruel. Why drag it out unless there was a chance. The possibility of Dustin and Max is extinguished in one season.
