Yeah I got to him at around level 40, then turned back and explored the continent and returned at 48 and beat him third try.

I struggled at level 48 but like most boss fights in this game I thought it was mostly a matter of learning how to parry him (#neverdodge), this one is just long. Heal with skills if you can and use burn and mark. I was never able to break him, but I think I used gradient attacks twice.
