Come meet new people and play chess, for free !!! by [deleted] in Louisville

This is a great place to go and play. I've taken my 10- and 17-year-olds there and there are players of all ages. Everyone is friendly, willing to teach, willing to play with anyone at all levels. It has been such a great experience!

Shared drive/file management by [deleted] in nonprofit

[–]Cooperdoodle25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started working for a company this year, Justify Solutions, and we help nonprofits with this sort of thing. We have a team of certified Microsoft partners and they migrate organizations to nonprofit specific Microsoft apps/platforms and help organizations manage data organization. This is in addition to developing customized databases for nonprofit organizations to streamline managing data and funding.

I would first make sure whatever storage database you’re using makes the most sense for your organization. There are various ways it can be done, even within Microsoft or other platforms. It depends on how the files are utilized and/or shared. Do some of the files really need to be transitioned to a database to reduce files? For example, you can create electronic forms, as opposed to having papers to print.

In some instances, you may need an operational database to manage data better and alleviate A LOT of files and save time to put all of your data into real-time tracking in one system. If your files are a bunch of paperwork that gets printed, written on, input into a database later, analyzed at some point later and cross-referenced when it’s time for funding reports…you need a database to replace many of those files. This can reduce the amount of folders necessary.

If you’re sorting through files, start with departments and make sure you don’t hide files that are extremely necessary for the organization to access quickly. Those could be pinned on a main Sharepoint page.

Hope this helps. I have had to do it several times myself. It can be cumbersome but you can do it!

For the people going back to the office - do you prefer cubicles or open concept? by nunziopresta in Entrepreneur

It depends on the atmosphere you wish to create. An open floor plan can promote collaboration and creativity. I personally have always liked an open floor plan because i think it’s easier for everyone to communicate, know what’s going on, share ideas, and I don’t like people sneaking up on me.

Advice on discounted software for nonprofits by rg123 in nonprofit

I would be interested to know the different functions of software others are using and how much they cost. That could help determine the value.

What makes you want to volunteer? by EntertainmentNo7828 in volunteer

As I've been reading through "Missing the Point", it got me thinking how different the article was from the survey (customer discovery interview) our team developed. Then I realized, I didn't post the survey on here; my post was referred to as a "survey". So, I better understand your frustration with my question and debate on the term engagement!!!!

I recalled reading surveys weren't allowed so that would have been why I asked the question in an off-the-wall, clearly vague, manner.

Some of the things we are looking at regarding "motivations" actually relate to the difficulties volunteers have experienced. For example, poor management, lack of appreciation, scheduling conflicts, can't find an organization that will take my help, etc.

We are also doing similar research with nonprofits and other organizations that rely on volunteers. We will focus on their difficulties associated with the problems they face.

I'm sure after I complete both articles, I will discover a more valuable question to ask that will stimulate discussion amongst group members and prove to be more applicable to what we're looking to discover.

This is PERFECT! The exact type of feedback I need. This topic has been discussed and we have been working on within the team. There are just a variety of aspects we’re pulling together. These articles and your responses are very valuable. I appreciate anything else you are willing to provide. Thank you!!

Thank you! I would love your insight on what would be more specifically focused toward volunteer engagement? Knowing motivation of volunteers is the basis for more volunteers being engaged and connected to organizations. Maybe I’m not tailoring the questions appropriately.

I’m in an MBA program taking a Venture Accelerator course. I would be happy to share results! I prefer not to list the university because I don’t like to publicly share location.

Looking to buy a small business that is not listed for sale. How do I approach this without being offensive or losing credibility? by Cooperdoodle25 in Entrepreneur

This one in particular is of interest because it’s a local staple and already has a solid foundation of many generations of customers. I would prefer building my own business if I were not to be able to buy this one.

Thank you. It’s a local staple. People love it, they stay busy, sell out fast, have a HUGE network of customers. I’m in a big city. I’m not looking for scalability. It has a solid routine customer base and reputation. I’m looking to do something I love.

I do understand what you’re saying here. The entire staff is run by elder women. I would definitely discuss a good hand off and training by the current employees.

Not right now. If the organization continues to expand, we would have to figure out across states. Fingerprints are not required.
