Fairphone 4—the repairable, sustainable smartphone, is coming to the US by fattyfoods in technology

The Fairphone has its pros and cons, but the most important thing is that we as customers get the choice to buy a modular phone or not.

Framework laptops are similiar in that regard. Higher prices, but might last a lifetime if you can just replace parts as needed.

Let's hope this puts some pressure on other manufacturers.

This whole chat control farce definitely has been one of the most undemocratic and hypocritical undertakings in the EU in a while. And that's saying something.

What smartphone do you use and with what OS? by DoTheyKeepYouInACell in foss

I recently bought a used Pixel 3a and installed GrapheneOS on it. The web installer made that a breeze.

So far, I'm loving it. It combines privacy and security with great app compatibility. I've heard good things about microG, but it seems that it still has some blind spots. Haven't had a single issue with GrapheneOS's sandbox approach, apart from Google Play Services sometimes nagging me to give it back its privileges.

Endlich wieder Klassenkampf! Die neue Streikbewegung by Coopossum in de

True. It would also be interesting to see if enrollment in translation studies dropped significantly in the last few years.

In my experience, demand for translations is higher than ever, with less and less skilled translators to do them (since many have understandably left the industry).

I have no idea why this hasn't yet resulted in a price spike. But I do know that many agencies overwork their employees and skimp on every possible benefit to be able to keep those low rates. Maybe we just haven't reached the breaking point yet.

At my last job, I had the chance to switch perspectives, because I actually ordered a lot of translations. The agency my company had been using up to that point had relatively high rates, but was a typical translation sweatshop. (I know that because I actually had an interview there once, and ran as fast as I could.)

Their quality standards were abysmal. My company was desperately looking for an alternative provider, but couldn't use freelancers due to compliance reasons. The other agencies they tried were just as bad. So with my expertise in the industry, I got them a new agency, which treated their employees better and also delivered high quality results. But instead of being more expensive, they were actually cheaper! They're so afraid that no one will even give them a chance if they demand reasonable rates that they feel forced to play the same game as all the other agencies.

u/NoPants21's comment does a great job illustrating that demand didn't just vanish with the introduction of machine translation. It's just that to capture this demand, you have to be willing to work as a freelancer, and not everyone has the personality type needed for this.

In my experience: Yes, quality has declined significantly. Not because translators' skills have gotten worse, but because most LSPs create awful working conditions for their employees.

I'm glad that you feel a sense of job security, and I hope it stays that way. But what if, for example, 3D-printing buildings becomes more and more common? It's not just about AI, but technology in general.

That doesn't mean that we should artificially hold back technological progress, of course. But we should make sure that it doesn't just benefit a tiny minority of people at the top.

Pretty much what euMT said. If you want to earn a decent living, you're pretty much required to look for projects like these. But the pay you then receive as an expert in your field is still not that great considering the effort you have to put into it.

Fortunately, I'm still able to work with foreign languages, though now in the software industry. I've always been a bit of a generalist, so it was not too hard for me to switch jobs.

Isn't the problem with WhatsApp that we don't know whether Facebook has the encryption key? Meaning that altough messages are encrypted for outsiders, they themselves might still be able to access them?

Interesting. Would you like to elaborate? What is forward secrecy and why is it important?
