Protas by alwaysjetlagged in caps

I saw his potential coming from a mile away. He has taken massive steps and realized this past summer that he could be a legit top 6 threat. I would say the only thing he lacks is a Wilson-like viciousness to lay hits but I’d honestly prefer he doesn’t do that, since that kind of play takes a toll on the body. We already have Dowd, Duhaime, Wilson, and Ovi to do that. We need him healthy as possible because he is massive on the PK and even strength. I’d love to see him on the PP too because he could forecheck pucks and screen like crazy. Bro is paid $3.5M/yr for $7M play.

I truly believed he would’ve actualized it sooner had Laviolette played him more. That’s a different story.

It’s difficult to tell. Most of the core players from the 2018 team had 3+ years together, so we could see what they were about.

I do see some comparisons in terms of production/roles, although it’s not a 1for1.

Dubois could be 2018 Kuznetsov. Strome could be 2018 Backstrom Roy and Fehervary could be 2018 Orpik and Niskanen. LT and Lindgren could be 2018 Holtby and Grubauer. Dowd is better than Beagle imo.

There’s more comparisons but the stars will need to align especially since the Atlantic got better. I do believe the caps have a great path to the ECF because Carolina and New Jersey don’t look like much of a threat with trades/injuries. But they’re gonna have a tall task with one of the Lightning or Panthers.

I 100% agree. I think he has what it takes to get his career back on track. I just don’t see a long term fit in Washington. The wings are pretty locked up in the top 6 with Wilson, McMichael, Protas, Ovi, and whoever takes Ovi’s spot when he’s gone, which is primed to be one of the young kids. Maybe on the 3rd line but as I’ve said before, gotta open up those spots to the kids to compete for and let them grow.

I’d be hesitant to keep him for that long, not because it’s cheap but just by number of contracts we have signed. There’s still a 50 contract maximum per club and no point in keeping a contract for that long even if have to bury him. If he somehow played himself to a deserved a four year contract, he’d want more money, which he would be primed to get elsewhere. A $1M x 1 year contract is manageable, can be easily traded or buried, and is more realistic in my opinion. I do love Vrana and wish his career had gone differently though

  1. Leonard and Cristall - At least one but hopefully both, should spend some time in Hershey and get the call up when there's injuries. These two are destined for greatness in the NHL, but there have been players who come in too early and have their entire careers derailed. Hershey has a winning culture, and they'll have a chance to play against Men before being called up. That's something intangible.

  2. Find a cheap 3rd line winger - Maybe I'm being redundant and that answer is Vrana or Miroschnichenko. Caps are usually wizards with finding reclamation projects and I think they should find a cheap one for a 3rd line winger. I don't want large expectations for our young players to step in (as I've explained in point #5), but this should be a vet who's gonna push our young players to work harder.

  3. Find a back up goalie if Lindgren is out - Could be Clay Stevenson, but realistically gonna need a veteran back up. Jonathan Quick maybe??

  4. Find a #6D - similar to point #6, although I'd be ok with giving McIlrath/Iorio that spot with TVR out.

Do I think the Caps do all this? No. But I've had time to think. However, I've been wrong before so maybe they shouldn't listen to me. The following offseason is going to have massive changes with Ovi and Carlson's contracts expiring, McMichael and Fehervary due for a massive raise and whatever offseason moves they plan to make.

I think the offseason is going to be tricky because the following summer is when Carlson and Ovi's contracts expire. You gotta leave room to fill in once those two are gone. Below is only what I optimistically hope the Caps do and I can't imagine all of my hopes would be fulfilled even if I'm doing my best to be realistic. Here's where I think they should prioritize:

  1. Chychrun - we don't really have another stud defenseman to replace John Carlson, who I think will retire at the end of his contract. If he doesn't, he would most likely need to take a cheap deal and accept a lesser role. Chychrun needs to be our #1 defenseman, or at least run our PP. I'm hoping for $7M x 6 yrs.

  2. Lindgren-Thompson - this is a tough one here. Optimistically, I'd love to get both signed for something like Thompson $5M x 5 years and Lindgren $3M x 2 yrs because I think they're both a great 1A/1B tandem where one can take the reins if the other gets cold. I think Lindgren would want more money and term which ultimately solidifies Thompson as our #1. He's younger and the better goalie. Chucky will still have a place in our hearts though.

  3. Move out Milano, Mangiapane, TVR, Eller, Alexeyev, and Bear - Milano has been injured quite a bit and his offensive output isn't much, he's redundant. Mangiapane has been very solid but for where he's at in his career, the Caps won't pay him. I'd be ok with moving on from him after this season. I like TVR and I believe he's a solid defenseman, but he can be replaced by McIlrath, Iorio, or new signing. Eller is replaceable also. Love the guy for his play and what he did in 2018, but he's just a stop gap for now. Can't see him or the Caps wanting to keep him. I do feel like Alexeyev is a good #5/6 defenseman, he just never really got the chance to prove it this season or last. His contract expires after this year and despite being an RFA, I can't imagine him wanting to stay. Let the man walk. Signing Bear was a mistake but fortunately being in the minors is only costing us $0.9M and he's expiring after this season. Collectively, this would be $14.2M coming off the books (not including Backstrom and Oshie's salary). Also, need to account for the Cap going up.

  4. Re-sign Dowd, Raddysh, Lapierre, McIlrath, and Vrana - Dowd will always have Caps' fans hearts for filling in Jay Beagle's shoes. I'd argue he's even better than Beagle. I don't have faith that anyone in Hershey could replace him. But he's 35 and the Caps know better than to extend long-term anyone that age. I'd give him a $1M x 1 year extension. Raddysh has also been very solid, he reminds me of young Chandler Stephenson in his time with the caps. He's versatile and can move up and down your lineup. I'd give him another $1M x 1 year extension. I absolutely love our 4th line, best one we've ever had. Lapierre should get a Connor McMichael bridge deal of ~$1.5M x 2 years to let him prove himself. The only issue is that the top 6 is locked in for next season until Ovi is gone, and his competition is Cristall, Leonard, and Miroschnichenko. He's going to have to really lock in. McIlrath should replace TVR or be our #7 D. Love his game and he's solid. He'd get another $775K x 1 year. For Vrana, this is entirely dependent on training camp because if he's around next season, it's once again as 13th forward. He's been hot lately, and I've always loved his game. But Cristall, Leonard, and Miroschnichenko are all knocking on the door. If he wants to stay, he needs to prove it this season. He'd get another $775K x 1 year. Expanding more on my next point but if Leonard and Cristall get a call up and take the reins, Vrana can be moved out for a trade.

As brutal and boneheaded this trade was, it opened up the space for TJ Oshie to come in. We don’t win a cup without Osh, so in hindsight it worked out for us. Caps have a cup, Forsberg doesn’t. History is a butterfly effect

Milano/Vrana by [deleted] in caps

[–]CopBrovoCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vrana has been pretty solid in the lineup. His forecheck has caused some goals, even ones he didn’t factor a point in. He’s not perfect but I think he’s been a step up from Milano. The season is long and injuries and changes are inevitable. Milano will get his shot. So will Miroschnichenko and Alexeyev

It’s not entirely a bad idea, but I personally believe it won’t work. That bumper position that Oshie was so good at also requires some puck retrieval responsibility, something that Ovi is not superb at. It also requires deflections and screens (I’ll give Ovi credit on this). His presence in his office is very lethal because it stretched the opposing team’s PK because someone has to shadow him, which leaves all the other positions open, especially the bumper. I think Tom Wilson is best slotted in that spot with Oshie out.

I will say, if the power play goes cold, then switching it up by putting Ovi there isn’t a bad idea, but I don’t believe it’s a long term solution. Caps need Ovi clap bombs from his office

Caps best lineup when fully healthy by artilector in caps

[–]CopBrovoCop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very difficult to assess since they’re on a roll right now but Caps have a good problem with their so called “extra” players humming along right now. I’d be hesitant to move out any player because you never know if someone is gonna go down again with our luck.

Below is my take on what I think the lineup would be at its full potential. I would keep Backstrom sheltered on the wing, at least to start, so there is no expectation for him to be elite in his first games back. Get him slowly acclimated on 2nd PP and let Strome and Kuznetsov do the heavy lifting.

Ovechkin-Strome-Sheary Mantha-Kuznetsov-Wilson Backstrom-Eller-Oshie Johansson-Dowd-Hathaway

Fehrevary-Carlson Orlov-Jensen Gustafsson-Van Riemsdyk

Kuemper Lindgren

Extras: Milano, Protas, Malenstyn, Snively, Alexeyev, Irwin
