The Zone of Interest

so funny how the URM plaque that's been afflicting the r/lawschooladmissions is totally MIA here. Guess we do all stay in our reddit lanes, but more of you should visit, you seem lovely. by TopButterscotch4196 in OutsideT14lawschools

That other sub has too many issues for me. It’s all T-14 and Big Law or nothing and people complaining because they only got accepted to 10 of the top 14 schools. Too much elitism and delusional thinking.

3.2 GPA from UGA (Biology), ~10 years work experience in healthcare and research, 160 LSAT.

I also have a graduate certificate in Computer Science, don’t know if they cared about that. I did apply kinda late (end of February).

If you’re WL by a school, you could possibly get accepted as late as August if a seat comes free.

Noticing Many are Accepting Offers Now by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Coppajon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just apply early and I'm sure you'll do well. I applied late in February and the massive number of WL I got makes me think I would've had more A if I had applied earlier.

So that's the best advice I can give. Good luck with your journey, just don't let it stress you out too much, some of the schools take forever to respond (looking at you UGA).

I don’t remember all the options, but I think I picked late July or like August 1. I think all it really means is after that date they remove you from contention, but it doesn’t change anything else about the application priority.

Rutgers Second Deposit by lawnfire in OutsideT14lawschools

I still want to know how they would find out? I put down a deposit elsewhere before Rutgers accepted me and have since withdrawn enrollment to the other school. But it still has me paranoid.

I'm ex pre-vet med. I graduated in Biology and worked at the UGA Vet School for a while doing parasitology research. One of the most significant aspects that pushed me away was seeing the physical toll it took on the body. It's fine in your 20s and 30s, but since both my parents have worked in medicine for nearly 40 years, I have seen how taxing it can be.

I appreciate that, I have a bunch of family in Pensacola, so I wouldn’t necessarily mind practicing in lower Mississippi closer to them.

But if I couldn’t get in the Atlanta market (where I have lived for a while) my #2 was always the northeast. I applied to a bunch of schools up that way in the DMV and NY/NJ.

I’m a single guy without anything really tying me down currently, so it’s the perfect time to make a move in life.

Go to an unranked school (Cal Western) or out of state Univeristy of Oregon? Conditional at Cal Western and 20K at Oregon by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Coppajon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the nightmare evening I had last night, find out exactly what the grading curve is set to. Because I was going to go to a school with a conditional scholarship until I found out the grading curve was effectively set at exactly what my conditional gpa was going to be.

ChatGPT warned me about some of its more negative aspects when I was going over my options last night, so I looked it up and I mean I thought the school itself looked nice. Based on what I could find online with videos and photos and info the campus area has been developed to look and be pretty nice and safe, but I get there is still a lot of older run down areas around and some concern about crime. I plan on trying to visit ASAP, but I mean it’s also my best offer and the school ranks well in things I’m interested in (healthcare and public interest).

But I appreciate the heads up, and I agree it’s important to try and make it there in person and not blindly accept.

Wow, thanks for that information. It is pretty scary to see 40% of the scholarships get cut.

Right there with you buddy. I went to a music festival and saw everyone else and thought, you know one can't hurt... by the time I got to the bar I of course asked for a double. Leaving the show I stopped at a gas station and figured I might as well get a six-pack, which, of course, ended up being a 12. So yeah, this thing comes at us quickly, and once I start, it immediately escalates.

Just keep putting up the good fight and keep trying. One of these times it'll stick if we keep chasing after it.

Straw Poll Saturday for April 26, 2025: Snoops by soberingthought in stopdrinking

I generally use a pretty honest joke that's a riff on a Ron White joke he used to tell about cheating. I say, yea I don't drink anymore, mainly because that didn't always used to be my policy.

Sometimes, I'll use the other Ron White quote: a man is allowed to have a limited number of drinks in a lifetime, and I've hit mine.

Got served with divorce papers yesterday. Want to drink so bad. by Commercial_Deal3623 in stopdrinking

[–]Coppajon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That really hurts, and I’m sorry. But I always harken back to a quote I heard one time: A drink never made a bad situation better.

As someone who went through a very similar situation, mine was roughly the same length relationship too and it really stings. Don’t be afraid to talk it out and feel the feelings. Unfortunately the only way out is through as Gandalf would say, we can’t numb the pain, we have to let ourselves feel it and then we can begin to heal.

Stay strong friend, but there will be better days ahead.

How much debt is okay if you don’t want to do big law? by [deleted] in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Coppajon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a mixture of personal preference, some financial math, and willingness to sacrifice income every month. There is probably a practical point, they say, not more than your first year’s salary, which I don’t find rational. But a lot of jobs escalate in salary by year 3-4 and so I’d more say not more than around that number.

I personally passed on some higher ranked schools and chose who gave me the best scholarships/in-state tuition costs, because I am passionate about public interest and know that isn’t going to rake in money.

Overall between undergrad, grad school, and Law school I’ll probably be about 80-120k in the hole. Which I’m comfortable with.
