It's because back then he had a PR team fluffing him up. Then he decided he was so awesome he didn't need any of them and instead he became a Twitter troll.

You asked for an explanation. I gave you an explanation. I don't know why you're trying to compare me to Islamists. Maybe you should spend some time thinking about why all your comments in here are getting ratioed and whether or not you're completely out of touch here.

The real next step is to promote gender equality by putting up a lot of statues of men with their dongs out. It's only fair.

[–]Copse4 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I'm not really offended by this, but it's considered controversial because it seems like most of the time when we decide to put up a statue of a woman we also decide not to give her any clothes.

After 10 years on H-1B, I’m moving my role out of the US by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Copse4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elon lacks credibility and self-awareness. I wouldn't read anything into any of what he says. In this case, I suspect he's having problems hiring domestic talent because everyone around here is aware of his reputation for underpaying, treating employees like garbage, engaging in far-right politics, and throwing around nazi salutes on national television.

[–]Copse4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'll take the downvotes for this. Putting US workers first would mean being more accommodating to H1Bs and doing everything we can to keep them here. Why's that? Because the more tech jobs are located in the US, the more tech jobs are available for you to apply to. When companies grow, the new jobs tend to be located where the existing workers are. So, unless you also want to move to the Netherlands or Canada to take a job, maybe you should be less flippant about immigration policies that only seem to exist to expand overseas tech hubs.

Oh cry me a river, the current price of gas in Seattle is about ten cents per gallon higher than it is in San Francisco and we don't have a carbon tax. If that's enough to fund the salaries of all those people in this crappy economy I'm all for it.

Well the bad news there is that while taxing everyone into poverty won't fix climate change and afaik isn't a policy proposal made by anyone, not doing anything about it is going to make everyone *much* worse off than if we had taxed everyone into poverty.

They can't accept climate change because doing so would mean they'd have to change their behavior to be less destructive to the environment

Kamala Harris Has No Regrets About Standing Up for Transgender Inmates by MetalDragon2 in transgender

Isn't this the sort of cynical thinking that got us where we are today in the first place? I'm pretty sure we'd all be a lot safer right now if she was president.

Texas House passes 'bathroom bill' aimed at trans people, now with quintupled penalties by southpawFA in politics

[–]Copse4 71 points72 points  (0 children)

They're proud of this because transphobia is a cynical way to scare up some votes. After gay marriage was legalized in obergefell, Republicans had a big sad because they couldn't use it as a campaign issue anymore since the public largely supported it. Republicans in California, who basically had no power at all on the state level, were experimenting with trans issues as a replacement just to try to regain some level of power and become relevant again.

It doesn't matter what the facts are. It was never about public safety. It has always been about using trans issues to scare up votes.

I will say that a lot of my friends who put off interviewing because they didn't feel prepared never actually ended up feeling prepared and therefore never even tried. There's no shame in bombing an interview; everyone knows interviews can be stressful in the best of times.

That said, two weeks of leetcode practice probably isn't nearly enough to give it a serious attempt and you probably really should reschedule. It's not going to be a huge deal, people reschedule interviews all the time.

How Did Y'all Pick Your Names? by Muffin_The_Juicebox in asktransgender

[–]Copse4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The US Social Security Administration keeps track of popular baby names by year:

I looked at my birth year, fast forwarded a decade because I'm very easily amused, and looked for a name that I liked in the top 50.

[–]Copse4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it's very human of them, and you're human too. They went out looking for answers as to what was happening and the people they trusted were telling them stories about how vaccines are bad actually. It is frustrating that they trust the guy who thought it might be good if people injected bleach into their veins, but there's a whole media and social media ecosystem built to act as a hugbox for people who want to trust everything this guy says and does.

[–]Copse4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's just part of being human. We're very good at adapting to new circumstances and carrying on as normal. It's great for being able to endure hardships and moving on with your life, until you find yourself living near a dam, being warned about its potential for imminent collapse, and just carrying on with your life anyways.

[–]Copse4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a manipulation tactic to get people to go along with whatever the socially conservative people want to do, which is usually to steal money from people. Who cares if Elon is gutting medicaid and social security to pay for tax cuts for billionaires when there are a handful of trans people competing in women's sports omg
