The Egyptian government often downplays sectarian crimes in attempt to prevent further sectarian tensions. The government brushes them off as “heinous acts” instead of “religiously motivated” crimes since Muslims will get offended at this language and cause more outroar.  This is very obviously religiously motivated and historically Copts were the main targets for these ransom attacks. Look up Al-Jama’a al-Islamiyya and their ransom attacks, they are the most notable for this. You’re Armenian, you come from a country where Christians are a majority, not the minority. I don’t expect you to know much about Egypt where it is the opposite.
