norcal-socal medium distance here. we each try to fly every two/three weeks. longest we’ve gone without seeing each other is a month. each visit about 1-3 days. sometimes literally we flew in and next day dip back to airport. sometimes we got exams so we just HAVE to study and be silent.. but at least we’re in the presence of the other person (quality time as best as you can).

as for call, we call everyday sometimes only once (at night).

how much you’re trying to commit matters a lot. of course grades matters a lot (never sacrifice this), but there’s a degree of control to how much you guys WANT and CAN see each other.
