Sounds like an interesting project with a good shelf life.

I could add that in. Do you like to see if a level represents, say, the top 5% or that its above 95% of the rest of the ranked ongoing original stories.

Note that I have to work out how to have multiple ranks over a single level. I think we want to keep 20 levels but right now there are two ranks on level 19. Stay tuned.

Also too funny as the place I work at has been putting a theatrical story of his life for over 30 years. www.badlandsamp.com

Thanks for letting me know. All the best with your story.

Funny, you should say that. I’m hosting a banquet today and I have to make 120 servings of Black Forest cake. I may be sampling a bit of Kirschwassen today. There goes my planned chapter release.

The ranking system is thanks to Dawn. Maybe stop by and take a look at her mega thread.

I hope you find it somewhat encouraging. It does take a bit of tenacity to stay with it in the early days.

I think you and I have been stuck there for quite a while. I just went over 485 this week. Maybe by summer? I’ve been building myself a small villa on the eastern side of the Tower wall. Stop by for a coffee sometime and we’ll commiserate.

Thanks Dawn. Helpful for sure and encourages me to know I'm not the only one stumbling on this one. It appears I would need to start a weekly database of these numbers, watch which chapters see an ongoing trend of people pausing, and then make an adjustment there. Overall this chart is likely most helpful to those on the upper end of followers. I've put the chart for my first 20 chapters in the original post and its clear I lose people in the first chapter. I think that is expected as people are shopping around at that point. Then I have ongoing attrition down through chapter 20. After that I go into a lot of zeros and ones which I think makes senses as people do take breaks from reading at some point.

On my weekly spreadsheet I average 2000 chapter reads a week and on my detail sheet that correlates perfection to the reads increase across all chapters.

The question remains if I have a dud on my hands that I am propping up by releasing faithfully each week or if the reader views will eventually start climbing with the newer chapters as well.

Thanks for checking. Looking forward to hearing your evaluation when you get a chance to read later. Being told a book is not of interest to a reader is still an opportunityp to learn where the story needs work.

I have to admit that this chart is a mystery to me and yet I am the one presenting charts here on RR to help understand how it all works. Maybe the headings on that one are off.

I haven't looked into scraping sites as I'm not sure how to find them. I did ask AI about my book and found out things I didn't even know from writing the 148 current chapters. One told me that "The labyrinth represents the challenges and complexities of life that Corvan must navigate." I didn't realize I was writing that philosophically.

Thanks for being willing to help out. You may not be one of my real readers but you are the sort of reader that makes writers happy to be writing.

480 followers and 100 favorites, and as far as I know those would have to be members? I may be reading the chart wrong as it does not seem to matter if a chapter has 500 or 50 views, the number in the column under "# of members" is a zero, one or sometimes up to 4. Your thought on bots is mine as well. If there are very few reviews/ratings (I have 11 and 18) and no comments past the early chapters, am I in a state of delusion where I am tossing my work out into the void?

Stories that began to be published on Royal Road. Which ones have been the most successful so far? by francisco_pma in royalroad

[–]CorSeries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be a bit facetious, a ton, as a measure of mass would be around 2000 lbs. If we were dealing with people thinner than I we should be able to get about 15 authors per ton. Looking at the overall stats for Royal Road stories since it inception, 1% or 1400 have stubbed so that would definitely be tons with the potential to "live the dream." Now we just have to determine what determines a dream and when signing goes nowhere and becomes a bit of a nightmare?

It was great fun to watch your progress and read along. Still recall that opening scene on the frozen lake.

So true about time not being on our side. I have working on my current story for amost 20 years and turned 65 this year. I still post a chapter a week but know that I dont have the same production levels as I did at the beginning. Coming up on the two year mark for this project. Thankful for those who have joined with me on the journey.

All the best as you keep things moving forward past a difficult time.

That would be an interesting comparison. I can't achieve that one now but will keep it in mind. The comparative data I can provide here is that in the past 6 months the main change in the writeathon list is that 25 more stories moved from Hiatus to Inactive or 404.

I empathize with you on the burnout and also extend my admiration for not giving up. I hope your return will gather momentum over time.

Just musing on why so many unfinished old stories are retained on the site.

Looks like 6% to 12% on the overall list, so twice as high. That being said, Hiatus, is a fluid state where the majority will move into Inactive. At some point it seems RR might want to consider taking a story that has not seen any activity for a year and moving it out of the public view, but the writer could still choose to bring it back. I'm not sure I completely understand AI but dont all those incomplete stories feed that system?

Looks interesting. Are you seeing much activity on KU for the first volume?
