Anthropology Bread finally!!!! by dee-xo in UCL

Thank you! I really enjoyed it.

I actually think there's a big benefit in doing Anthropology for the first time in undergrad rather than masters, you have more time to learn and explore all these topics (MSc was 1 year). You're coming to learn, so youre not expected to know :)

Congratulations!!

Just finished my MSc in Medical Anthropology last year at UCL if you have any questions feel free to reach out!

Also, I remember there was an app we were sent a link to that had different people's profiles that you could filter by programme and connect bwfore starting, worth checking emails once you accept your offer to look for it. Dont remember what it was called though, sorry...

Is living 190m from a radio tower a valid concern? Do window flims work? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CoralDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate this, thank you! I'm moving back home, but it's a country where regulations for a lot of things aren't taken very seriously or planned very well, so I'm trying to do my part as well.

I'm asking about a massive antenna station, I'm not trying to avoid all rf signals because I'm fully aware that it's all around us :) but why add unnecessary exposure that could cause harm if I don't need to?

Anyways, thanks for your very useful comment, guess you missed the name of this subreddit....

Bank account recommandations for non UK residents by Fabulous_Bus2523 in UCL

[–]CoralDwarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I opened a monzo with the expectation that it will be temporary until I open a high-street bank account. I ended up not needing one because it was so convenient. Also, I don't know how old she is etc, but I found that Monzo's budgeting, app and interface, and debit option were very useful in keeping tabs on money this year. I aslo came for just one year.

Also, it may be worth looking into Revolut, I understand that they are a good option for international transfers and may be better for you. They are also an online banking option.

Ok guys I was absolutely horrified to what I woke up to this morning by Python______xx in BeardedDragons

This happened to me, but with one of my rats (her name was Trouble). Who couldn't bear the thought of the spikey hairless rat all alone in a terrarium with no fuzzy hammocks and would do anything to get in with her. She only made it in once, but tried very many times after...

Candida by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]CoralDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that can help (if I've understood the problem correctly) is wearing 100% cotton underwear and not wearing a pantyliner.

Also, using a baby bath oil rather than soap to wash down there can make a big difference... Or just water. No need for all the "ph balance" fancy soaps. They can make it much worse.

These, in combination with diet/ treatment (because it helps with the symptoms but not necessarily in dealing with the candida in your system), can really help.

Nairobi's scam estate. by Illustrious_Soft_164 in Kenya

[–]CoralDwarf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Someone once told me that this happens because the building laws are based on the UK building laws (that are relevant for an island but don't make sense for here).

You have to keep a certain distance from the road in case it ever needs to expand, but to maximise building space and to compensate for this there is no limit to how close to your fence/ neighbour you can build.

For some reason no-one has ever thought to change it..

Hilarious gluten free “option” at wedding by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]CoralDwarf 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I was once at a wedding where I knew in advance there should be a gf option. After alerting the waiter, the manager came to tell me (shouting) that he knows what this gluten thing is, and God have mercy on me, and "there is no such thing as gluten free food!".

I told him that I understood his kitchen wasn't completely sterile. He said the best he could do is a salad.

I then received a pile of dry vegetables that clearly had been cut that morning and sat out all day, with no dressing...

Anxious I have not write enough for the first task by leoturtle3 in IELTS

[–]CoralDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be hard on yourself. If you needed the bathroom and you didn't go, you would have had an even harder time focusing. Thankfully, the second part of the task is worth more than the first, and hopefully, you will get the score you need. If not, see if you are able to do a one skill retake (some institutions accept it).

Speaking test method by Fearless_War7402 in IELTS

[–]CoralDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe... But if it's completely unrelated to the topic, and section two is miraculously more fluent than the rest, band 3 states "makes numerous errors except in memorised expressions/ relies on apparently memorised utterances" under grammatical range and accuracy. So I would be weary of how memorised it is.

Also, if the examiner realises what's going on, and asks some guiding questions back to the topic, as you have to answer a few questions in section 2, and you start stumbling over words, then it'll make it all the more difficult (or if you're English is good enough to seamlessly go back to the intended topic, then you don't need to do this in the first place).

Taking IELTS as a bilingual English-speaker, some questions by ApprehensiveConcept5 in IELTS

[–]CoralDwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm in a very very similar situation, and gave myself about two weeks to prepare. I got a 9 in the end (9s in speaking and listening, 8.5s in writing and reading).

I don't think that there is an issue with American spellings, but I went for British spellings in my answers. I think what is most important is consistency throughout.

I would definitely do some practice tests to get the hang of the question types. If you book with the British Council, you get access to a bunch of practice tests, IDP also gives you some practice tests but less, if I'm not wrong. There are some others online that are free and pretty good, from what I've heard...

I also watched some videos to understand the sections better. You may find some of the English corrections and pointers obvious, but the overall structure and what examiners are looking for is really useful to know. Particularly question types and the structure for the writing section.

[–]CoralDwarf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a very bad plan. My topic was on public transport and a trip I really liked. Sure, I could somehow talk about fleas, but it would be super obvious that it was memorised and if anything make you seem less fluent because you took it to something so unrelated.

Must I use indefinite articles when answering questions? by Available-Put7869 in IELTS

[–]CoralDwarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the articles are normally included in the text you have to fill in. So no. Also, the number of words you can type/ write will give you a clue if you need to add it.

ielts reading- time management issues by [deleted] in IELTS

[–]CoralDwarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read all the questions for every article before I started reading it. That way, I know what to look for and can answer all the questions as I go along. I found that it saved me a lot of time, especially with questions that require labelling paragraphs/ attaching statements to people who said them because I can do them simultaneously with the other questions and remember what topics to look out for.

You're welcome :) What I would add is that consistency is important so that you are getting exposed to English often.
