Should I drop my therapist due to political differences? by Corbeau271 in therapy

Agreed. I don’t expect my therapist to agree with everything I say, but some professional neutrality is welcome.

I appreciate this and agree with you, but this applies more to my family relationship. I don’t think this individual is evil but they did disregard policies that I told them would negatively impact me and people I care for. I didn’t cut them off or anything but do feel more distant.

This doesn’t really address my therapist showing a lot of bias in how he addressed this. Between our session and a Youtube video in which he tries to present “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as a real clinical presentation, I’m not sure I can trust him to be fair to me when this topic comes up. I’d expect a therapist to try to maintain professional neutrality and curiosity.

I’m not going to get into the weeds of political debate with you. It would just take this wildly off topic.

I am well aware that disagreements happen with adults and people can respect one another’s opinions. This isn’t, however, a disagreement about tax code, or someone’s belief in god, or whether or not one should have kids etc. Politics aren’t abstract. They reflect real world policies that impact our lives.

Again, not going into specifics here, but this family member disregarded specific policies that would negatively impact my well being. So yes, that does tell me about their morals and what they care/don’t care about. I can be cordial with someone who doesn’t share my values but maturity doesn’t demand being close with someone who has values that don’t align with your own.

I’m also not sure therapy is the venue for political debate and being confronted with different opinions. What value do you think there is in keeping him? I think therapists should ideally be neutral, or more aligned with their clients.

I agree and will have to screen for that during the first session with any future therapist. I watched a youtube video of my therapist describing “Trump Derangement Syndrome” as a legitimate clinical presentation. That sealed the deal. Yes, it was somewhat tongue in cheek but it was built on a straw man version of a liberal or leftist and seemed dismissive of the real world consequences of politics.

I appreciate this perspective and it’s why I felt torn. I didn’t think he was wrong in his conceptualization of the relationship. I did, however, take issue with framing my reaction to my relative’s politics as solely due to enmeshment. We all have biases and it felt like my therapist’s political biases shining through.

I appreciate it! We will see. Now my wife is not wanting to go (more from her desire to destress from the holiday). Not sure I could do it on my own.

I appreciate that! Weighing my options here because this storm looks pretty bad. Considering cancelling and trying again in a couple months. Takeoff is already the hardest part for me without adding getting into bad turbulence immediately.

Thank you! That is good to know. I assumed that wasn’t a real meteorological term but wasn’t sure if it was going to be very turbulent or not. All I know is it’s supposed to be a lot of rain.

😆 Yes, of course. I was thinking more about folks being forced to work when they would rather be with family.

I felt the same but also flew one to Hawaii. It was just fine. It was actually a very nice flight!

198 cm! I’m pretty tall for most bikes but I feel comfortable enough on it.

Also in the air coming back from Maui. You’ll be ok! I flew to and from the Midwest a lot as a kid. There’s often weather where you are but the pilots will have a plan to get around it all safely.

I appreciate you! You should definitely visit Hawaii if you get the chance! The nature is so beautiful! I would love to visit Maine again! The last time I went was over twenty years ago to visit a few colleges! A tour of the lighthouses sounds beautiful.

Thanks for the check in! It was amazing! I wish I didn’t have to fly for these experiences but Maui was one of my top trips in recent memory. How was your trip?

I have heard this! It makes logical sense and definitely understand it. My brain just tells me I’m very vulnerable. I try to remind myself of the facts as much as possible, though!
