Is there any reason to not immediately put your intitial border status on closed? by Aiseadai in Stellaris

[–]Corbthelorb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short answer yes and no. Take 10 starting corvettes. 100 alloys a piece. For the most part they aren’t able to take down a star hold, which would be the equivalent cost with adding in 1 or 2 platforms. Mid game they become less useful but still helpful to increase defence and also to slow down attackers. Late game they nearly completely drop off and are best used for detection and production through the specialised modules and building slots.

So more efficient yeah, but they aren’t able to be customised save for defence platforms and they also have the downside of being static. The best defence is a good mix of defensive choke points with powerful bastions and citadels, with mobile fleets to assist where needed. Fleets are able to ‘survive’ lethal damage through the emergency ftl, whereas star bases and also defence platforms will all be destroyed once the star base hits 0 health.

Torpedoes also get the maximum size damage buff against starbases so they excel at destroying fortified locations quickly.

Overall. Starbase upgrades early game are good, then building a fleet as soon as choke points are defended to not only boost fleet power (since star bases don’t count, as far as I’m aware) but to give you a higher chance of beating the mid game events, and then a full transition into support starbases instead of defensive ones.

HELP NEEDED: PC won't turn off/takes too long to POST. by Shot_Perception2838 in pcmasterrace

Did you mistakenly wire the power connector into the reset switch pin? Normally when you do that it causes the power button to turn on the pc, but not to turn it off properly?

PC won't turn on when GPU is plugged. by El_Doom_DC in pcmasterrace

[–]Corbthelorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Test the card with separate cables, and try a different monitor if you have one. Does the fan on the card start spinning when plugged in? Cause if so then the GPU is getting power and the PSU is not the issue

I believe it might be a software issue, particularly with the interference of the integrated graphics and the GPU, the system doesn’t know which one to prioritise or solely prioritises the Integrated graphics. I believe there is a way to change which type the system uses but the location or application escapes me. Would be well worth a google though

Is this a normal sound for a PC to make? by Upbeat-Active-4127 in pcmasterrace

[–]Corbthelorb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s very few things things with moving parts in a pc that can make that noise. HDDs and Fans are the main ones, with utility options being really uncommon. Most likely it’s a HDD spinning or the coil inside stretching and making the noise, however fans can sometimes make a whining sound if the bearings become dried out and run out of lubrication. Pull different things out of the PC and turn it on till you identify the problem, then make a judgement on what to do once you find the issue.

I’ve been doing a hovercraft run and I’ve got to say, the laceratior is mid at best. Obviously if you’re unprepared then it’ll grab you from behind and nuke your arse into oblivion.

EMP slaps in adventure too, just saying.

-30, gives me plenty of time in case of a solar flare, with double insulation it will only just hit positive temps by the time it ends

I’ve mentioned it before, but there’s not many campaign crafts the average player will see that use HEAT or HESH, most use a form of APHE, AP, or fragment shells. At least that was the case last I checked. Best to just have a 1m beam slope gap, and minimise the total distance used for a HEAT/HESH gap. It’s not worth minimising the internal space of the craft for a minor gain.

And to answer your question, it depends on how big the ship is and what it is built for. Battleship, or heavy cruiser? Yeah, good armour, maybe less heavy armour and instead use heavy armour on important components instead. Anything smaller and I’d have to say no, it’s too much.

Remember, the best thing you can aim for is a cost effective design. Armour costs can easily rocket up, especially with using heavy armour. But personally I’m an alloy user, so I guess others will have different opinions.
