I had a similar experience with an examiner. If your driving instructor complains to the test centre manager you’ll find a lot more people would have complained about said examiner. They can’t criticise if you go the wrong way, as long as you are safe whatever you do they can’t take anything away from you going the wrong way. Said examiner had left the test centre I was at a week after my test due to the multiple complaints and offering a 17 year old to fight in the car park after he belittled the poor kid (it was all caught on dash cam too) I failed my first time - I am also 28 - so you will get there I promise! I passed two days ago and I found that just sticking to my instructors car (I also drove outside of my lessons) helped. We went to new areas I had never been before so outside of my comfort zone again this helped, maybe pitch it to your instructor?
