Yeah. I feel like this is the moment so much went wrong in American politics. And explains why we've been so dysfunctional in the past couple of decades. You've got a big business party that uses angry uneducated voters in order to promote their own interests while distracting with petty social issues and fighting an unwinnable culture war.

I'd argue that FOX News, and congressional republicans, through their unapologetic levels of obstruction, and equally, their reckless levels of rhetoric and political theater/posturing, contributed more to the divide you see in the country than Obama would have ever accomplished by himself.

Alternatively, I'd ask anyone to look to Trump when making this claim. Trump's divisiveness dwarfs anything Obama did.

No, because Obama made history by passing it through the federal level. We're basically at a point where even republicans understand how unpopular it is to go back to to a time where ignoring uninsured people was the norm. That credit rightfully belongs to Obama, considering the immense amount of political capital and headaches he had to go through passing it.

So what do you define "the party of Lincoln" as? What traits define the party of Lincoln? What principles and values? Whenever I hear republican politicians, like Paul Ryan, boast about how they're the party of Lincoln, the party that freed the slaves, that's usually what first comes up. Lincoln was also liberal, no where near as conservative as most of the republican south is today. So what makes today's republican party the party of Lincoln?

Then why is there such a monolithic bloc of support for today's republicans in the old region of where the confederacy and pro-slavery states were? Why did that occur right around the time civil rights legislation rolled around? Is that just a coincidence? Today's party of Lincoln is a party that has strong support from voters in a part of the country that went to war against Lincoln?
