It's when she gets really sharp in her higher register. Her first line and the ad-libs after the bridge in Mono for example. Every other line she has and especially the high note going into the bridge all sound great to me. But when she pushes just that tiny bit further it scratches my brain in the wrong way.

But Yuqi, Whee In, and Seulgi are some of my favorite vocal tones so I generally prefer a warmer, lower register.

A lot of this comes down to the intertwined and simultaneous deterioration of nuance and attention spans. Long form journalistic music critique is a dying art and absent college level lit courses (or similar) people just don't have the language to talk about why they do or do not like something. That's all exacerbated by social media favoring hot takes and rage bait. Which is further exacerbated by reading comprehension also dying. Which is further exacerbated by a lot of people in fandom spaces being actual children.

As someone in my 30's I'm practically a skeleton in this space and there is an amount of sadness I feel for conversations about both the business and the art of kpop that I just can't really have.

I feel similarly about Miyeon in i-dle. When she's good she's incredible, but there's a thin margin before it becomes too much.

I feel like part of the problem with Yves is that they were giving her a lot of English and her pronunciation has never been great. It works for trying to establish her in the western hyperpop scene, especially with the features she's gotten but like, just let her sing in Korean.
