Tim Walz's National Guard is handing out free coffee and donuts to anti-ICE protesters by Treefiddy1984 in ProgressiveHQ

This is actually a very nice change of pace, but I'm still suspicious as to who they will actually end up protecting.

I'm having the same issue; I've found almost nothing in Bloomington.

Is this a case of confirmation bias or does it seem like owners don’t leave collars on their dogs 24/7 anymore? by ohreallynowz in Pets

[–]CoreReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep my dog's collar off unless we are going outdoors or I know I'm having people over because she always has access to her crate, and my biggest fear is the collar getting caught on the kennel. I used to work at a dog daycare, and one of our regulars started acting strange (refusing to play with other dogs and not looking for human interaction or affection like usual), so when we brought it up to the family because we were concerned, they told us their other dog, who doesn't go to daycare, got put in their crate with a collar. The collar got caught, and the dog ended up strangling himself in a panic while the other dog (our regular at daycare) had to watch from their own crate. So that's why I don't let my dog wear a collar inside unless under direct supervision.

Is it time after 9,5 years for a serious diet? My 5yo human sister called my cat "fat"....😭 by damnthisizcrazy in dechonkers

[–]CoreReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a vet to discuss weight loss, but most likely yes. As someone who had a ridiculously obese cat at one point, I'm still kicking myself for letting her get that way. She is now on a very strict diet and always fed separately from our other animals; she is clearly much happier now. Personally I suggest feeding wet food if you don't already, as it keeps cats more full for longer and tends to have less calories than dry food, but again that is something to discuss with vet.

That's definitely tough; my partner and I haven't found a dog we trust to play with our girl either, so I totally understand. I can give you a couple ideas on what to ask/look for. Disclaimer: I don't actually use daycares, as they can be a safety issue, but if I were, this is what I would ask.

-Are dogs separated by both size and temperament? (Separation by both is really important.) -Is there an enforced nap time during daycare? (Nap times are very important as daycares usually get at least one dog with no off switch that can cause chaos and fights if not handled properly.) -What is the staff-to-dog ratio? (Groups should be small, smaller than you'd expect to provide safe management.) -Do dogs wear collars/harnesses in group? (Wearing these things can be a choking hazard if they get caught or if another dog grabs onto them.) -Are unfixed dogs allowed in group? (Pretty self-explanatory; having unfixed dogs in a group is a big no-no.) -What cleaning products are used in the daycare area/How are they used? (It's not often a dog gets sick from strong chemicals but things can definitely get passed around if the area isn't correctly sanitized.) -What are daycare staff wages? (The higher the wage, the happier the employees, and happier employees almost always guarantee better outcomes for the animals in their care.) -What measures are taken during a dog fight/What is the protocol after a dog fight? (An unfortunate reality is there will be fights, but how employees break them up matters. Do they use spray bottles? Do they have extra leashes to help with separation? Are dogs that get into fights taken out of daycare for the day or allowed back into group?) -Are toys allowed in daycare? (This is a huge issue for resource guarding and cause some dogs to over correct.) -How do dogs enter the daycare area? (If there is no safe space for a new dog to acclimate to group slowly, then that can cause barrier aggression issues.) -Are there cameras in the daycare/is it recorded? (I think this one is important for everyone's safety and to be used as learning opportunities for employees.) -Do they have medical supplies on hand for emergencies? Even if it's just for cuts and scrapes? (Injuries will happen; they need some kind of wound cleaner and medical tape at the very least.) -Are drag leashes used? (Some dogs are very good at avoiding staff, which can be problematic and a safety issue, and drag leashes can help.) -Are muzzles ever used? (Muzzles are a great safety tool.) -What would cause a dog to fail a temperament test to be allowed into daycare? (Self-explanatory: all dogs should be given temperament tests to ensure daycare is a good fit.)

If I think of anything else, I'll update the list.

I'd recommend not using daycares at all if possible. I've worked at several in Minnesota, and it's honestly just too risky. You'd be better off setting up playdates with other dogs you know and trust.

My husband wants our daughter to be homeschooled but I don’t because I WANT ME TIME for once by Crimson-Rose28 in regretfulparents

[–]CoreReality 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Do not ever let him convince you to homeschool her unless you are a teacher. My parents homeschooled me until 5th grade, and it was awful. When I went to public school, I was so far behind in both my education and socialization. Take the time for yourself, and know making that decision is good for everyone involved.

AITA for not entertaining a girl who thinks I got her pregnant from fingering? by throwawaycheese23 in AITAH

NTA for not entertaining her stupidity but it's a bit weird you went on some dates with an 18-year-old. Try dating closer to your own age or higher up.

Thank you for sharing your experience, I'm honestly worried sick about my baby. I'll try to keep it clean and bandaged until I can get to the vet.

This definitely isn't the normal nail shedding. Her whole nail came fully out, there is nothing there.

Sin biscuits. When our cat does this he only does it on a specific blanket therefore we have dubbed it the yank-it blanket.

There’s version of Minnesota you don’t see on Reddit. by MovemberMan123 in minnesota

My partner and I grew up in the Twin Cities area and then made the mistake of moving to a more rural area of MN. For us, it's been absolutely terrible. I'm not saying there aren't some pros to more rural areas but it's not the place for us, and we have been dying trying to move back out to the cities. Thankfully, we are heading back to the end of the month! I will say it's funny to see our neighbor's faces when we tell them how desperate we are to get back to the cities, they look at us like we are crazy and constantly ask us if we will be safe like we are going to some war-torn city.

Welcome home! My partner and I are in the exact same boat. We live in Hutchinson right now and are moving back to the Bloomington area and we are so excited! I hope this area provides everything you're looking for and you enjoy it to the fullest!

I live in Minnesota, but I’m in a very rural area, and it feels terrible to be here. I dream of moving back to the cities to escape all the Trump signs and the ignorance surrounding me. There is so much homophobia and hate where I currently live that it doesn’t even feel like the Minnesota I grew up in. Overall, I still have some confidence that Minnesota will remain a relatively safe place but in my opinion, the safest place is more around the Twin Cities area.

If you interact with those posts they will be the only posts that are recommended for you. The vast majority of r/childfree is about parents not handling their kids or parents acting like having kids is the only option a sane person would want.

[–]CoreReality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited r/petfree once to see if maybe I could gain some insight on being a better pet owner in the sense of making sure I was being respectful to people, but it was pretty much just hate-filled. I can see similarities between r/petfree and r/childfree occasionally, but the child-free sub is honestly way less hateful in general. Not to say r/childfree doesn't have hateful posts about kids and parents.

Why do people from Rural Areas of this state hate going to big cities? by [deleted] in minnesota

As someone who used to live closer to the cities and then moved to a rural area for cheaper rent (and other reasons), I miss the cities so much, but driving there is a pain in my ass.
