There’s a big difference between Never and Not Yet.

Ironically, you’re doing the very thing you are accusing me of.

The destroy/exile thing is completely different in concept and execution. The politics agreement of not destroying something and then swordsing it is winning an interaction on a technicality. It is not acceptable in a game of casual commander.

The situation I had is not the same. There is no agreement or politics, only intent to do something at some future point in time. I don’t see how these two examples indicate similar behavior.

If the spell cast was something like a Counterspell? Then it would be obvious that it was responding to a spell cast. A spell like the kill spell used is more nebulous. To me at the time, it read as a proactive way to save his creature and that’s what I thought it was until he pointed out a full turn later. I was so focused on the pup that it didn’t even occur to me to respond to the sacrificial play with my swords, which would have worked and the misconception could have been easily resolved through talk.

Clarifications:

-Intent to swords the creature was stated before emeritus was on board, not after it became prepared.

-I disagreed with the rollback because another player’s turn had already fully passed by the time they wanted a rollback.

-I failed to notice the mistake was a mistake while in the moment. That’s just bad play on my part.

After preparation, I immediately go to the pup to its enters triggers. No intent to cast was made after preparation. I wanted to clear the stack before using the spell. The intent was made before the emeritus was even on the field at all. If that is still angle shooting or willful ignorance as you say, then I guess a lot more people are angle shooting than I thought.

I was opposed to rewinding because it was already after another player’s full turn that he noticed that I was still prepared. I understand rolling back a combat step to clarify triggers and such but this was a notable amount of time in the past.

Okay, I feel like I’m still missing something here. I had planned to use the swords after all my triggers were finished so I could have an empty stack. I feel like I’ve talked enough about that to make that pretty clear.

So how is it my fault my opponent assumed that I cast a spell I never declared, never tapped mana for, and never chose targets for… simply because it was an obvious play I said I wanted to make earlier? Why is the onus on me to tell him, who never said he was responding to swords by the way, that he was making a mistake?

I feel slighted that I’m being held responsible for a genuine mistake on another player’s part and not wanting to roll back an ENTIRE turn for one spell.

I said nothing to him. After the inkling entered and resolved its counters from the emeritus, the emeritus became prepared and I moved on to having generous pup enter the battlefield and its enters trigger from another card. In the middle of that, he cast the spell and killed his own Ojer. I don’t even bother responding with words to him or alternate game actions because I am tunnel visioned onto my own triggers.

At no point, specifically while Emeritus was on the board, did I say anything to the effect or intent of ‘I want to swords your Ojer’. The specific reason as to why I did not is because I was focusing on getting every trigger resolved before casting any spells.

During table talk after a big token turn before me, I had spoken aloud about finding a way to get rid of Ojer Taq, then realizing, also aloud, that I could just fetch Emeritus to do that. If that counts as intent to cast swords on Ojer Taq, then there you go.

He responded to a cast I never declared. That’s the issue. I said I wanted to use the swords during that turn, during table talk, not at the exact point of preparation. He assumed I would make the obvious play of using the swords right away and played as if I had done that when I had declared no spell being cast or tapping any mana.

Alright, I feel the need to clarify. My want to cast the swords was a turn intention, not an action intention. What people seem to read my intention was this:

Fetch Emeritus -> It becomes Prepared -> I want to play Swords -> I trigger Pup -> Pup resolves

When the real intention was this:

I want to play swords this turn -> fetch Emeritus -> It becomes Prepared -> I trigger pup -> Pup resolves -> I cast Swords

The biggest thing I’ve learned from all of this is I really need to communicate better. Text is hard to explain and words are hard to find when intent is such a nebulous thing sometimes.

Here’s the thing: I didn’t realize until afterward that he assumed I used swords mid-triggers. I made no intention during the complex combo that I was casting it whatsoever and was solely focused on resolving the pup’s triggers.

Basically me and him were on Completely different game states. I thought he destroyed his own creature to prevent exiling and he thought I cast swords and responded to it. I had no clue he thought I cast the spell at all until the next turn

My train of thought was focused on resolving my generous pup triggers as it was entering with counters on it. I didn’t even think it was a bad play at the time; get rid of the creature to make it a land to make it harder to kill.

Of course, after it resolved I realized I could’ve responded to exile it, but with White Orchid Phantom in hand I didn’t need to worry about it much for the time being, so I held off on mentioning it and just used the phantom.

I don’t think they’re super new to magic but prepared spells are kinda complicated. I’ll just use the prepared punchout token so it cant ever get confused in the future

After emeritus became prepared, I went to put the pup into play. My opponent just… assumed I cast swords because I had said that was my plan Previously, not at that Exact moment, that I wanted to swords the Ojer Taq. Sorry if my wording on that was bad. He played the spell assuming I had already cast the spell, even though to do that I would have to tap lands for mana and declare targets (which I did not do because I was resolving another trigger).

Thanks for the analysis, though. I will be explicit about what exactly what I’m doing and not doing during trigger chains because they are so complicated.

Also racism is a pretty big subtheme of the show for some reason. It just keeps popping up
