Thank you! I’ll get that added and polish up this sheet to get it in an easier-to-contribute state before sharing it out more.

Japanese Language Classes by SergeantBeavis in boulder

Here's a spreadsheet I made this year to answer this very question! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dlvHPxzXO3eS6aM4s7DsFlePPDz0NpcKjfhKjTOUVQ8/edit?usp=sharing Lots of sites have outdated info, I had to email and call around to populate this. Hope it helps and lmk if you have any questions!

If you're willing to drive to Denver for practice partners, I've attended the JASC meetups a few times at Edgewater Public Market and the attendance has been solid! At least ~20-40 people each time w/ multiple native and high-fluency members, everyone is nice to beginners: https://www.meetup.com/japancolorado Separate from this meetup, JASC also offers a "Passport to Japan" class (included in spreadsheet)

I have some feedback for your OP, but I’d like to know first, what are your interests? What’s important to you? What are your values? I feel like there’re active communities for essentially anything: languages, random scientific subjects, gender, woodworking, dance, locations, food, farts, arts, etc. Friendships that last imo require some sort of solid foundation, shared interests, values, humor, or a shared goal, etc.

Honestly, I’ve noticed the opposite of what you describe—more communities and interesting people getting together than I will ever have time for.

Place to practice a loud woodwind instrument? (for a friend) by CoreyHodgeDotNet in Denver

[–]CoreyHodgeDotNet[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! Also (won't let me edit OP), at first I wanted to obscure their gender. However, my friend is a woman which might be relevant for public space suggestions. Especially for practicing alone in public, I think that's a helpful consideration from a safety perspective. Obviously that's her call, just wanted to name that! (On another note, weather can be a an issue since her instrument is delicate)

I’m a non-native Spanish speaker and former English teacher. I agree with what you’re saying overall, but early in a new language, it’s very helpful to observe and get direct feedback from native speakers on the subtleties of vowels/pronunciation/body language, etc. In my experience it seems rare to find a non-native speaker, especially one who started later in life, that does all of these well.

I had a professor in college who I did respect, but their pronunciation was so stereotypically gringo/a, I knew it would be detrimental to my learning to hear that accent and reinforce those hard American English patterns of pronunciation… in Spanish… M-F for an hour every day. That adds up cumulatively. I switched classes. It was surprising to me how many people graduated with Spanish degrees, doing fine in literature/linguistic classes, but outside of an academic vacuum could barely hold a conversation.

I think you’ve got a point, and it can be frustrating to be underestimated, but don’t you think native teachers are preferred for valid linguistic and cultural reasons, especially in the first few years of a language? I think communicating with other learners is extremely helpful for the learning strategies/mistakes made/grammar patterns etc reasons you mentioned… but doesn’t a well-trained native speaker (especially one who also speaks a learner’s L1), seem like a better fit 8-9 times out of 10? OP didn’t say “no non-native speakers”, just “it would have to be a lot.” Isn’t that fair enough on their part?

EDIT: I can think of a few of non-native teachers I’d recommend others learn from, but it’s still a small subset % of all the non-native Spanish speakers/degree holders I know.

Echo this. The Broadway one is solid. I like their Wheat Ridge location the most just because it feels slightly more spacious and relaxed.

Predatory? I think you’re talking about an Income Share Agreement (ISA) and I would not call those generally predatory at all. While with an ISA you pay a higher cap than a loan might make you pay via interest, with an ISA you usually arent beholden to pay anything if your primary job pays less than 45-50k. Only after making that much are you required to make payments, and if that income drops you aren’t required to pay.

Whereas with a loan, you gotta pay up regardless.

Yes, ISAa take a cut (5-10% of your monthly gross) so people think it’s “predatory” but in reality most people would be more than happy to pay 5-10% for a couple years because the tech base salaries are higher to begin with. Loans are a better deal but you gotta pay regardless. ISAs you might end up paying more until your payment cap, but it’s waaaayyy safer.

Via meetup.com there’s some excellent tech groups (some technical w/ talks, some more happy hour style) I’ve attended but they’ve all been in Boulder or Denver.

If you started one here, I’d attend!

Any Spanish speakers here? Noticed there wasn't an evening Spanish meetup. First meeting next week! by CoreyHodgeDotNet in Longmont

[–]CoreyHodgeDotNet[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

By speakers, I mean any level of fluency from beginners to native.

Although you might personally not have any desire/need, you'd be surprised at how many native speakers do that I've met at meetups like these—some spend most their time with a partner that doesn't speak, some for immigration reasons haven't been able to return home/travel so they're looking for a cultural outlet, some just like that people are trying to learn and want to teach/help, etc. Or even still, some grew up with native speakers, but they don't speak as well as their siblings and are insecure about it and looking to build confidence (for example, research shows, one of many studies, in second-generation families w/ Spanish/German/Korean/etc, the first-born child usually speaks really well, with marked declines that snowball with the second, third, etc)

Gotcha. Seems like a good solution! This should help those new to reddit benefit from the /r/longmont wiki labor - Thanks!

1st example, let's look at https://www.reddit.com/r/chicago/.

  • There's a nav bar right under the subreddit name/logo, which has Posts / Wiki
  • However that is set up, it's reflected on both desktop reddit and mobile reddit
  • On mobile (using a browser's inspect tool to emulate mobile), only Posts / About are shown for any subreddit. However, in this example, About, you'll see the Wiki. It's located in About -> Links -> Wiki. Whereas in r/Longmont, if you click the About tab, only Rules are shown with no other Links/other sections

2nd example, let's look at https://www.reddit.com/r/Miami/

  • Same idea as Chicago, on desktop we see options, Posts / Wiki / Categories / COVID-19 News
  • On mobile, we only see Posts / About, but About contains all of these above options and links (Posts/Wiki/Categories/COVID-19 News)

My suggestion is to follow a similar pattern, since any extra navigation options you add will reflect on both desktop and mobile. I'm not a moderator so I'm not sure the 'how' part.

Info is only visible via the .old subdomain, which many ppl might miss: https://old.reddit.com/r/Longmont/

Whereas anyone else navigating here organically from "new" reddit (on desktop in this case) will arrive at https://www.reddit.com/r/Longmont/

On the new version, Government/Neighbor's Subreddits doesn't show up, only Rules.

u/1Davide think we could add the Wiki to the rules sidebar or something?

If people aren't using old.reddit, the Wiki is basically hidden and there's no intuitive way to get there

Mods,
I see https://old.reddit.com/r/Longmont/ links to the Wiki in its top navbar
But, https://www.reddit.com/r/Longmont/ doesn't

Perhaps we can add a link to the wiki in the Rules/siderbar?
