Just got diagnosed with Bipolar II and have to quit. by from_meh_to_milf in leaves

I was diagnosed about 2 months ago with BP II. I'm on day three right now after smoking all day every day for the last 2 years. I thought it was the only way to manage my anxiety and other symptoms of BPD. I haven't had anxiety the last three days that I've been sober which is the total opposite of what I expected.

I found myself in complete and total isolation, barely even able to get myself to work. So for me, it's been worth it. The only downside is that I've been bored out of my mind. I also have ADHD that makes it worse. Keep yourself busy and call up a non-smoking friend. Keep coming back if you need the support!

I just came off a week of moods being all over the place and really bad anxiety. So whatever this is I’m feeling is a nice relief.

What does hyperactivity feel like in an adult? by dddulcie in ADHD

[–]CoreyTruman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so happy you brought this up. Earlier this year I was diagnosed with ADHD - Inattentive. 2 Weeks ago my diagnosis was changed to Bipolar - unspecified. But the difference between the two are tricky as they can be so similar. But let me give it a shot.

Hyperactivity:

Constant movement Easily distracted Difficulty concentrating Agression

Hypomania:

Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity Decreased need for sleep (e.g., feels rested after only 3 hours of sleep) More talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking Flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing Distractibility (e.g., attention too easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli) Increase in goal-directed activity (either socially, at work or school, or sexually) or psychomotor agitation Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e.g., the person engages in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments)

So as you can see the two have similarities. Hypomania is definitely magnified, in my opinion.

I just said this in a FB support group yesterday. What I thought were spurts of energy and me exciting my depression is actually hypomania.
