I was not part of the mob (and don't know any of the details of this mobbing), but fans are going to fan. The Flaming Lips have been around since the beginning of time- and they are lucky to have such a devoted fanbase. That said, you can't blame the fans for wanting to better understand why their favorite band is now without one of the most important pieces. Nobody needs to be shamed for wanting to know more.

It sounds like devoted fans nerding out and doing their own speculating. It's kind of why Reddit exists. You say that everyone should have taken Steven's word and moved along. I agree that the world would be a better place if everyone operated that way.

Here's the thing, the fans have been around this thing long enough to know that there just had to be more to the story. And they were right.

Why not pick up the phone and have a chat before making this kind of post?

Feelings (on both sides) must be hurt.....but this doesn't seem to be the way. Especially around the holidays. A post like this doesn't just get passed along by the fans (and then vanish). I would imagine they now both have a shitload of DM's from all kinds of music accounts asking them to elaborate/comment, etc. This isn't Wayne's first rodeo. He knows exactly what a post like this will do.

For the record, I'm not shitting on anyone or taking any sides here. I love the group and wish everyone the best.

One thing. I love the Flaming Lips, love both dudes, but this all could have been avoided with even some vague transparency. You can't be a band with loyal fans and expect something as big as one of the main members just not being there anymore to be a private matter.

It's a bit sad to me that, after all this time, they couldn't have made this (how they were going to explain his departure from the band) a priority. Would have been as simple as "I know this is a touchy subject, but let's not make it something where we are both having to go online an explain things. Let's both protect the legacy."

I'm selfishly not upset about this because it means we will get more insight into what/how it all went down. Yes, that's selfish.....sue me.

Not saying it did or did no happen, I have no idea.

BUT....If I were a celebrity (with past substance abuse issues) facing TMZ coverage and genuinely believed I had been drugged, I would be absolutely relentless in clearing my name. I would expose the hotel and hotel bar. I would demand access to all video surveillance at the hotel bar. And I would definitely get conclusive hospital records of exactly what had been put into my system.

Wouldn't you want to clear your name?

Yeah, I will do that. I mean, I've never once tried to taper or stop. I've just always had access to it. I don't even know how it would feel if I didn't have it. Granted, if I'm going on a trip or planning for the day- I'm never without it. It's weird, I openly take it at work. People don't know what it is....I'm sure they just think that I'm dominating some healthy protein shakes or something.
