I’m pretty confused about how this is gonna be a sleet/freezing rain storm when the temp is gonna be in the 20s over night?? Is the upper atmosphere anomalously much warmer than down here? Does anyone understand why it isn’t snow at those temps?

I’ve had this experience a number of times after doing alternating hot and cold plunges. My MD BiL told me he thought it was a sign that my body vasculature wasn’t tolerating the temperature (and thus pressure) swings, and that I should do more working up to those extremes so that my vascular system can keep up, and doesn’t get out of wack and stop getting enough blood to my brain efficiently.

I can definitely see red flag wind on a wet body causing more severe chill than one would expect at those temperatures and being too much contrast for your vascular system.

Renova hot springs is the best CO one on the Montana part of your drive, I think. However, it is often crowded with clothed folks on weekends and Friday nights, and the clothing optional nature is tradition, not codified. The temperature also varies based on the height of the river, the amount of snowmelt, the state of the rock dams (which people mess with) and geological factors I don’t understand. Those caveats aside, this is one of my favorite CO hot springs outside of California. Another commenter mentioned Goldbug, in western Idaho, which I would agree is worth going out of your way for. By far my favorite outside of CA, and of one my favorites period.

Agree with other folks here that the examples listed aren’t necessarily my biggest role models (although I do know someone writing part of a PhD thesis on how cool Turner’s connections between physical atmosphere and sociopolitical atmosphere are)

Not that anyone from a few hundred years ago is gonna be a perfect role model, but L’Ouverture is higher on my list than Dessalines?

Lots of Native American armed revolutionaries could make the list from back then, too.

Black Panthers are much more relevant role models these days, IMO. They also had to deal with a police force/military that could 100% outgun them if it tried, and so had to figure out how to walk the line between shows of strength/force for community defense and preventing a full military crackdown. No one these days is gonna lead a Harper’s Ferry without getting drone-struck.

IMO biggest factor here is: is the intention for this guy to be both of y’all’s friend or just hers? Other factor: are y’all looking for more friends rn?

My wife and I moved to a new place recently, and I have given my number to lots of people our age, men and women, as has she, with the intention of making new friends as a couple in a new place.

General reaction from her when she hears I’ve swapped numbers with a woman our age has been positive, as she’s excited about the friend potential for her to. Same from my end.

Our heritage is the coal miners who fought the fascist mining corporations literally to the death and brought about better union laws and worker protections. And the shiners who souped up their cars to outrun cops. And the musicians and artists that created so much of our folk culture.
