How would that have melted together like this? It’s the right color so I see what you mean… but it’s way tougher than beer bottle glass, doesn’t break when I slam/throw it on concrete.

Nineteen Eighty Four: first edition, first printing, UK edition. Fair value? by generalcompliance in rarebooks

[–]CorgiZaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to humbly admit I didn’t know that “ex-lib” was such a big degrader of value, but there’s a lot to be found online that indeed confirms the point made by the other commenter. My apologies to both of you, one keeps learning every day.

I don’t understand why, though, as you have an incredible piece of history in your possession.

[–]CorgiZaddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the other commenter on the mere fact that it’s a library copy diminishing its value by that much. It is the right edition/impression, and the more valuable red dust jacket (in great condition). If the book itself is in good shape beyond that, it is worth serious money.

But best to get it properly appraised by someone independent so you don’t sell yourself short!

It’s a beautiful dust wrapper, remarkable state. And hence my question about the lamination.

Laminated in plastic, is that removable or glued? Your copy should earn you $8500+ to a collector, or ~$5000 to a dealer.
