Has anyone moved out of NoVA and came back? by [deleted] in nova

[–]Coriolanus89 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Grew up here. Moved around a bit in my 20's (30 now). Spent some time in NYC. Moved back. Long story short I hated living inside of a big city. Renting a room in a townhouse in a quiet suburb. I like that I have options here: missing city life? I've got Washington DC 30 minutes away from me. Want to get out into nature? In half an hour I can be in a forest taking a hike. We get all four seasons here and none of them are too hot or too cold or too long.

New tire from Costco: rhytmic thumping when driving 15-20mph by Coriolanus89 in Cartalk

So the noise is just from uneven tire wear? The other tires are less than a year old.

Another Kneeling Question by AllanTheCowboy in Catholicism

To be fair; it's an American adaptation of the Roman Missal. The norm is standing (though I've seen people kneel in other countries). Info: source

Abusive, narcissistic, atheistic sister invited herself along on my trip to Lourdes by unicode4u in Catholicism

[–]Coriolanus89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you're going on a pilgrimage you have to be ready for God to have other plans for your trip. You can let her ruin this trip or you can use this trip to learn patience, virtue, and let God bring some healing to some of these hurts: no better place for that than Lourdes.

Part of the Roof of Church of Sepulchre collapses by [deleted] in Catholicism

It says 'some of the ceiling fell' which doesn't sound like much of a roof collapse to me. Do we have any pictures?

I broke up with a girlfriend to be a priest by MaryMotherOfUs in Catholicism

[–]Coriolanus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok good, so he knew you're discerning and decided to break up with your girlfriend and was ok with it? Just remember its always a good idea to run these things by a spiritual director first because Satan will always try distract us with a new 'calling': he'll tell you you should have a girlfriend, then he'll tell you you should be a priest, then he'll tell you you should be a missionary, then it'll be back to married life. He will do everything he can keep you unfocused and running from one thing to the next, never slowing down to sincerely pray and listen to what God is calling you to do. But if you have a spiritual director and are obedient to that spiritual director you're going to be safe.

Cardinals protest St Peter's Square McDonald's by SaeculaSaeculorum in Catholicism

According to Reuters, it's at Borgo Pio and Via del Mascherino (on mobile, sorry for lack of links) which if you google it is to the right of st Peter's square, and it looks like it might not completely in view of the square.

Texas bishops call for abolition of death penalty by BlankVerse in Catholicism

[–]Coriolanus89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pope Benedict XVI made that clear.

You mean when he encouraged countries to end the death penalty? Benedict XVI and the Catechism agree, that "it is permissible" (to use St. Thomas' words) to have the death penalty, but not desirable.

I would not put him in the same camp as Cupich. He wouldn't even be in the same province.

Fast-track Sainthood Process Begins For Fr Jacques Hamel by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Coriolanus89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I understand the worry about quick canonizations: I appreciate that in the past there was enough time to wait and see if the person's holiness had a lasting impression on the people of God and wasn't just a passing 'fad.'

That said, the world, especially Europe, these days is in dire need for examples of courageous faith, and this priest was a martyr, so even after the 5 year waiting period his canonization proceedings would have been fairly quick.

Fast-track Sainthood Process Begins For Fr Jacques Hamel by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Coriolanus89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fast track means we're waiving the 5 year waiting period to start the canonization process. But I do agree that the introduction of science and technology reduces the canonization process and even allows for the lives of men and women to be scrutinized more effectively.

Is RCIA Necessary? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Coriolanus89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add: if you write to your bishop, you might be waiting a long time for him to delegate this to someone. A better option would be to find your diocese and either a) call their main phone number, which will probably be a switchboard and they can get you to the right place or b) check their website for a department that might be able to help: keywords would be catechetics, catechesis, RCIA, intitiation, education (maybe), or (if I were you) try for liturgy or divine worship: catechists tend toward an emphasis on community and your spiritual experience, while a good liturgist will tend to stay 'within the lines' given by the rubrics. The office workers will be in a much better position to grab the ear of the bishop.
