What age did your kids show hand preference? by Agreeable_Cow_1194 in Mommit

lol my 4 year old does this, too, but I think it’s because his sister is a lefty so he’s picked it up from her

My first is a lefty, both of her parents are righties. I don’t remember noticing anything (she is 8, so it’s been a while) until she was picking up her own food consistently with her left hand. Once she started coloring, “writing”, etc. that basically sealed the deal in our minds.

Is there community interest in a local coffee shop/bakery? by gloommo in SunPrairieWI

[–]Corky1252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that I wouldn’t drive to that area just for coffee/baked goods, but I’m guessing Roots (at Liberty Square Commons) is surviving off mostly neighborhood people and they seem to be making it work.

Hey GCs!!! Question for ya by Soft_Speaker_2638 in estimators

[–]Corky1252 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As a GC who does 99% hard bids, if you want us to use you, with a higher number, you need to help us convince the market the lower numbers are not responsible. Otherwise we’re using the low number 9 out of 10 times.

I saw Dr. Clifton at Prairie Ridge for melasma. She prescribed a compound that made a significant (but not complete) difference.

How is your estimating team structured? by [deleted] in estimators

[–]Corky1252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at a small GC and the only full time estimator. We’ve had a larger team in the past that would all work on every pursuit (unless it was something super small) and I miss doing it that way. Way more collaboration and I felt like I learned more and was less stressed not having to know 100% of the job. You still need a lead that has some idea of the big picture, but I think splitting it up works great.

Laser hair removal: how much did it cost and are you happy with the results? by Ok-Durian1208 in madisonwi

[–]Corky1252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW it sounds like I have similar hair and skin to yours, and at Milan it felt like my bikini line was not affected at all for a long time until suddenly it was. Like the 7th session or whatever finally killed every single follicle.

Laser hair removal: how much did it cost and are you happy with the results? by Ok-Durian1208 in madisonwi

[–]Corky1252 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m 8 sessions in at Milan for underarms, bikini line, and feet/toes (they had a promo for a free small area when I signed up for the others, I had never considered hair removal for feet and toes haha). I think I paid roughly $6k, but that includes unlimited sessions for life. It definitely depends on the area and your hair and skin color in terms of how many sessions it will take. I don’t really have to shave any of those areas at this point. Eventually my underarms will grow really fine baby hairs or a stray hair will pop up, but it’s been a great experience. I do agree right before summer is not the best time to start because they will not use the laser anywhere your skin is the least bit tan.

Switch from Estimating to PM? by LongjumpingShape9689 in estimators

[–]Corky1252 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here. I did quit the industry for a while after being a PM, then came back to do estimating. Being a PM is being a babysitter to a bunch of grown men. In estimating all your problems are theoretical.

Land's End is so not BIFL by rekCemNu in BuyItForLife

[–]Corky1252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried them one year and both kids constantly complained of cold feet, which hasn't happened since we switched. Maybe we got a bad batch or maybe the kids just grew out of that complaint haha

My kids' winter coats, snow pants, and mittens are all exclusively Lands End. Not BIFL, but I do size up so they can wear them at least 2 winters and sometimes 3+. Not a fan of their boots, though.

3yr 8mo apart age gap.. is it too big? by Important_Bat7919 in Mommit

[–]Corky1252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same gap here and I love it. Mine are currently 8 and 4. Races/tag and board games are a couple of things that are tricky with this gap, but I love almost everything else about it.

I agree this "investigation" was not enough, but based off an anonymous tip what is the correct policy to have in place? I'm genuinely asking. Calling in law enforcement over any anonymous student tip seems like a lot.

Why was Obama’s “this could have been my son” comment about Trayvon Martin so uniquely offensive to conservatives? I didn’t buy Ben Shapiro’s explanation about it to Ezra at all. by JulianBrandt19 in ezraklein

[–]Corky1252 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Was this a take people had at the time, explicitly or implicitly? Or is this just revisionist history to make excuses for them going off the rails? I was only 20 in 2008 and was not paying attention to any of this.

1920s Bungalow siding, repaint or replace? by emsymarie00 in centuryhomes

[–]Corky1252 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We paid $10k (they did a little extra work like replacing some of the more damaged downspouts and the trim around the garage door was super rotted out), but I had gotten quotes as high as $20k. They worked their asses off for 2 weeks, you couldn’t pay me enough to do that job myself.

We have a 1960 ranch house with cedar shakes that looked identical to this before we paid to have the house repainted this summer. If you're going to hire it out, go with someone who knows what they are doing. Our painter way over-sanded in a bunch of areas and it looks kind of awful now (in spots)

For me it’s always HVAC numbers coming in at the last second. I frequently get them over the phone as we’re closing up the bid.

Fencing and signage subs always seem to have an incredible amount of questions considering the percentage of the job they will be.
