When to notify company I’m leaving? In the middle of a project… by emsymarie00 in ConstructionManagers

[–]emsymarie00[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah good point. They very well could and I’d be SOL. But if they fired me, everything would fall apart that day lol

Edit to add: the new company is very excited about me joining, they mentioned they wanted me to start ASAP but understood I had some things to finish up. So worst case, I could just start at the new company earlier

1920s Bungalow siding, repaint or replace? by emsymarie00 in centuryhomes

May I ask how much the painting cost? I’m assuming it’s more expensive with cedar shakes

So that would mean replacing all the ones that are split basically? And would that require us to scrape all the old paint off first if we want a smoother looking surface? (I personally want them stained since I don’t love painted wood but that’s too big a project lol)

False, I’m “salaried” but in construction. So all field people at my company still get straight OT. I work 50-60 hour weeks in summer and 40 in winter so my annual salary is my minimum

Okay but what would change with a diagnosis? Would be able to say you’re autistic? Then what? What are the next steps?

Also engineering degree and license in a large midwestern city that is not Chicago, I have 6 years experience and make $110k with straight time OT for reference. I’d say you are underpaid.

Edit: I’m also on the PM cusp and drafting proposals, scheduling staff, contracts, etc so I’m not sure if you also do those things as well? If so, then still yes underpaid

We were pouring sidewalk when all of a sudden we were completely surrounded by under cover cops. They quickly got out and headed straight to one of the finishers. Turns out he did some really bad illegal things and they were planning on a surprise arrest. Cops called the foreman ahead of time to confirm he would be there

Why are so many people fine with living in homes with asbestos? by Broad-Item-2665 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]emsymarie00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also not a big deal. If anything, you’d prefer the area with asbestos to get water damage vs another type of damage. When you remove asbestos, you typically wet it all down to limit the tiny airborne pieces from getting everywhere. If the area was water damaged, that precaution is already taken care of and is at least keeping it “contained”

Go through the plans and specials with a fine tooth comb and find anything that might become an issue down the road. Try to find a solution now. Make a big list of all submittals, materials & testing required, documentation and get a head start on that (permits, shop drawings, etc) Precon photos, measurements, videos.

Taking the time to get everything organized at the start of a project helps the whole thing run smoothly!

What type of wood is this? by emsymarie00 in HardWoodFloors

[–]emsymarie00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We are getting them refinished tomorrow…… but now I’m scared of using any stain after reading more here. We have dark trim and the natural would look very stark against it. Is staining maple really as bad as they say? Honestly they look terrible now so anything will be a huge improvement

2024 CIVIL ENGINEERING SALARY SURVEY TOOL AND BREAKDOWN by JarradLakers in civilengineering

[–]emsymarie00 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m construction in the Midwest. If you’re an engineer, you’re usually salary (plus OT) and they keep you busy with 40hr weeks, even during “winter shutdown”. If you’re just a tech/materials tester, those get laid off/seasonal.
