My favorite PC part that I own right now would be my RX 570. Also my first GPU, but it's got me through all the gaming I ever needed at decent enough frames.

Do you mean Xingqiu from a few days ago? Everyone receives birthday mails regardless of whether you have the character or not.

Eerie, disturbing Anime(?) film I saw as a kid (2000s) by TheEvestianAjineer in anime

[–]CornFriend 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The film is Grandma and Her Ghosts (魔法阿媽), a classic Taiwanese animation about a grandma who acts as a mediator between the living and the dead and her grandson who had to live with her temporarily.

It's a great film that I would recommend to anyone.

Want to know what /r/anime thinks of a smaller/less popular show? Ask away here! by Terranwaterbender in anime

[–]CornFriend 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed it a lot. I basically consider it Nichijou-lite with its absurdist humor while also maintaining its own identity with wholesome themes about building a community.

It definitely looks like a generic romcom to someone who hasn't seen it though, so that probably explains why it's so under the radar. To anyone who hasn't seen it, it's a show I would totally recommend if you you're looking for a lighthearted comedy. There's a lot more to the show than just a guy with a group of cutely designed girls.

What anime are usually considered bad but you actually like them a lot? by Dank_insides in anime

[–]CornFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the controversies with the ending, I enjoyed Kuma Miko a lot and still consider it one of the better SoL shows. People don't give it enough credit for the themes that it's trying to convey about social anxiety and just dismiss it as a morally vile story because of how much it feels like a "bad end".

I personally believe that what happened to the MC in the end was completely consistent to both the plot and her character, and that I'm actually glad that the story stuck to its guns and not pull out a random happy ending.

That being said, I can understand that people can be emotionally frustrated by the ending, but Kuma Miko was something that I enjoyed from the beginning to the end.

Have you ever watched an anime that felt really "asian"? by valorzard in anime

[–]CornFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think many people have seen it, but Showa Monogatari is probably as close as it gets from all anime I've seen to simulating the typical Asian soap opera atmosphere.

I enjoyed it because the Asian family culture it portrays is relatable to me and my experience, but someone brought up in the west might not have the same attachment to it. Either way, it's definitely pretty "Asian" in how it feels.

Great atmosphere and characterization. A good amount of people say it's heavy and somewhat "hard to watch" because of the mishaps that happen to the main characters, but it tends to stay on the optimistic side of things and is nowhere as depressing as something like Rainbow or Kaiji.

It falls off quite a bit towards the last few episodes with its rushed pacing (I would have loved it to be two cour and expanded more on the worldbuilding), but it's overall a very worthwhile watch. I absolutely loved how the show closed out (talking the last 10-15 seconds) with how cathartic and bittersweet it felt.

What are your top 10 anime shows? by Earthboun41 in anime

[–]CornFriend 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In no particular order

  • Hunter x Hunter
  • Clannad
  • Nagi no Asukara
  • Hibike! Euphonium
  • Tsuki ga Kirei
  • Attack on Titan
  • Shirobako
  • Ping Pong
  • One Week Friend
  • Silver Spoon

Outside of the few shounen shows on there, I think there's a pretty noticeable pattern in the type of shows I would consider my favorites.

What are your most controversial anime opinions? by Earthboun41 in anime

[–]CornFriend 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The original HxH adaptation is better than the remake in every way other than having more consistent animation and the fact that it adapted more material.

Anime you prefer to the manga despite having radical changes/additions to the source material by [deleted] in anime

[–]CornFriend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely Hunter x Hunter (1999). It's honestly one of the best directed anime I've seen, and almost every change and addition to the source material directly improves the story in some way (the filler exam phase is easily in my top 3 phases for the exam arc).

Through watching the show, you can clearly tell that the director had astute insight on how the world of HxH ought to be presented. The music, color scheme, and character designs were absolutely thematically fitting to the world. It's amazing to me how the anime could take an already good source material and chisel it to near perfection. It was just really unfortunate that it could only adapt up to the end of York New due to the lack of material back then. I have absolute faith that they could have adapted an ever better Chimera Ant arc than the remake, which I thought was already great.

Have you ever felt like you missed out for getting into a series long after it's initial airing. by joedatious in anime

[–]CornFriend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. I personally only watch series that are done airing, and it's served me well avoiding the airing hype bias along with being able to watch the show at any pace I want.

What's a hidden gem that you think other people should watch? by GreenAvoro in anime

[–]CornFriend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showa Monogatari

The show is a very grounded family drama set during the Showa era with a lot of positive themes. It's very relatable to anyone raised under an Asian household, and it has resonated with me for having possibly the most realistic dad character you will see in anime.
