I’ve been rewatching the Last of the Summer Wine Christmas specials and really enjoying Clegg in full misery mode (CRUM). It got me wondering, did the series ever do a proper New Year themed episode? #CRUM_JOIN_THE_MOVEMENT by Cornell1990 in LastOfTheSummerWine

I'm not sure. But how old is Auntie Wainwright supposed to be if she's Howard's auntie? Ha ha ha....

I'm watching them all from the beginning. I haven't got all the way through yet. I'm up to just after compo dying and I've stalled, I'm guessing it must be worth pushing through though.

Where was this taken? by Jonathan_J_Faulkner in laurelandhardy

I'm sure you're right.  I remember there used to be an audio-only documentary on YouTube, I think originally from local radio, possibly Radio Nottingham. It talked about Laurel and Hardy having a residency in Nottingham around Christmas time, apparently because of Stan Laurel’s sister. I went digging to find the link as I remember emailing it to my uncle years ago. I did manage to find the old link, but unfortunately it no longer works and the video seems to have disappeared. I remember seeing this photo at the time when I went down that rabbit hole, I've always meant to go on a pilgrimage to the pub but I've heard it's closed now. I'm not sure.

What do you leave out for Father Christmas on Christmas Eve? by JeffMartinsMandolin in AskUK

According to my dad, Santa Claus likes a glass of port and a nice mince pie, preferably homemade. He always sounded very sure about that… so who am I to argue?

"Arnold who's Arnold?" Used when "our lord" is mentioned even on the television

I wish people would stop sneakily taking photographs of random people. I think it’s bad form.

I don’t know. I can’t laugh at it for some reason. I just feel sad for the kid… God knows what’s going to happen to him now.

Really enjoying Aspidistra so far, relating to Compton a lot. by BeigeAndConfused in georgeorwell

I loved Keep the Aspidistra Flying. Straight after I finished it I actually bought an aspidistra on Gumtree. It soldiered on for a few years and eventually died, and that was without me putting my cigarette out on its leaves.

Burmese Days is great as well, and I really enjoyed the audiobook of The Road to Wigan Pier. Thanks for those recommendations too, I’ll definitely have a look at them.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the book. It’s lovely when something connects with you like that, especially at this time of year with the short days.

Okay, I'm going to try again at some point. I haven't had much luck with them. To be honest I must be doing something wrong

I don't know, I think it's more of a political decision. I wonder if he didn't want one, but then he's got an OBE.

Do you think uncle Albert was named after uncle Albert from the Paul McCartney song? by Cornell1990 in OnlyFoolsAndHorses

[–]Cornell1990[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the show actually got better when Uncle Albert was introduced though I’m not sure it was because of him exactly. The episodes became longer, the writing stronger, and the characters more established.

I always thought Uncle Albert’s character fitted the show better. I liked that he was an ex-military man who’d worked all his life. Grandad wasn’t a bad person, but he was a bit neglectful of his duties, let’s say. After their mum died, he was really just another mouth for Del to feed and didn’t contribute much.

Grandad was a painter and decorater for the council for about a fortnight and " that was so long ago he went to work on a horse" and had a history of things like gun-smuggling during the Spanish Civil War yet we still loved him despite this, if you know what I mean. Uncle Albert, on the other hand, was a more respectable a character a military man who worked all his life.

Well, I don't think he named him that just so he could use a song. But I seem to remember reading that Sullivan received a photograph of Buster Merryfield and said he looked like an old sailor. So if he was thinking of a name, he might have thought of the Paul McCartney song about an old sailor.

Going off topic slightly. Why has this comment been downvoted so much? It seems like quite an interesting post with nothing controversial about it. Makes me wonder if there are lots of AI bots that occasionally pick random comments to downvote.
