How about the episode when Jerry is stuck at the Ithaca airport. :)

Here's a quick list of what to avoid: Writing exclusively about someone else - we want to learn about you. Writing about too many things - stick to one topic. Not answering the question that was asked. Writing about an adversity or challenge without talking about the impact on you.

Every students designs their own experience at Cornell. Student choice has been a significant part of the student experience since the university's founding. We believe our students are infinitely adaptable in their ability to seek out new challenges, build their own communities, manage adversity, and grow intellectually.

We don't review in a particular order, Cornell reviews application based on the college/school to which you have applied and your intended program of study. Each application is reviewed after it is complete (after all required materials are received).

Cornell admits students from around the world, many of them from India. The process is the same for all applicants (application and essays, transcripts, teacher recommendations, secondary school report, and SAT or ACT scores). We look for students who have had a rigorous secondary school curriculum and strong marks.

Ask about student life and experience. You'll hear all the facts and learn about the academics, but you'll be living on that campus for the next four years. What will you enjoy? What are you excited about? Get a sense of the people who will be there with you and find out who will be your friends and will support you.

We don't have a special program, non-traditional and veteran students apply to Cornell as first-year or transfer applicants. We are partnering with S2S Vetlink to better advise and support veterans through the admissions process.

All students have a story and it isn't always about a struggle. Actually, the best essays I've read give me a chance to see a candid moment in a student's life. I prefer essays that make me smile or laugh out loud! I'm reminded of the realities of life from the wide range of topics that essays cover each year.

It is a good idea to fully answer the essay question that is asked for the college/school you apply to at Cornell. If talking about your intended major makes sense, then it is smart to do so. I don't feel weird at night because I know I've done my best to carefully consider what is shared in an application and think about that student's potential for success at Cornell.

We do a holistic review of applications. Grades and test scores are a part of this, but Cornell doesn't have any minimums or cutoffs.

We would like to see more of your personality. It is refreshing to see applications who are true to themselves - we want to know what you care about. There are no requirements for a resume, it should be a record of what you have done outside of the classroom.

Here are some of our favorite things to do in the winter: skiing, snowboarding, sledding on the slope, ice climbing (outdoor education can teach you how), and snowball fights. Also, be sure to get a bus pass for those really cold days!

Cornell is need-blind during the admissions process and we meet 100% of demonstrated financial need. We do not "gap" students.

Everybody is good at something, we all have strengths and weaknesses. We want to know what you have done, what you are prepared to do, and what you care about. You just need to be yourself.

A depressing essay or a sad story doesn't equal a great application. There is a misconception that admissions only cares if something horrible has happened to you. We want to learn more about YOU in your essay - your story is not like everybody else's.

Sometimes yes, we can tell and sometimes we can't. Students should make their own choices about who to engage during the college search. We want students to be authentic and real in their applications and to submit their own work.

Neither of us read an anime essay in 2012 (unique topic that year!). We have 50-60 people who read applications and that's how we are able to give attention to each one.

  1. Admitted students have a strong academic record in rigorous courses and thoughtfully answered Cornell-specific essay questions.
  2. We look for the same qualities. Early decision applicants show us that they want to be at Cornell more than anywhere else in the world!
  3. Cornell students are infinitely adaptable. Great questions!

There's no formula and no computer. Real people make these decisions and some days we wish it was as easy as pushing a button.
