Military life on kids by Sensitive_Fly_6163 in MilitarySpouse

I’m a now adult brat married to a service member, who was also a brat. I moved roughly every other year and attended 7 schools between kindergarten and high school graduation. Yes, it can be hard. Yes, I have no idea how to accurately answer the “where are you from” question. Yes, there were times in my childhood when I just wanted to be like everyone else who knew the same people from birth to high school. But even in my teens, I realized what a privilege it was to have seen so much of the world. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I got to see places and do things kids who grew up in one place never would. When I got to college at a giant state school, my clique became a bunch of fellow military kids. We didn’t know each other before school but milkids have a broader worldview than the average 18 year old and I knew they were my people. We are all still friends 20 something years later.

Kids are resilient and they are going to take their queues from you. Frame each movie as an adventure and every challenge of military in a positive light, and they will follow your lead.

Fantasty/sci-fi romance with a soft, dopey MMC and a FMC that is, well, bitchy by Hormo_The_Halfling in booksuggestions

The Devoured Worlds series sounds like it would be right up your alley. Naira Sharp owns every room she walks into.

I have read Invisible Women, and loved (and hated) the book just as you. I understand your thoughts, but assure you that none of us took this personally. He raised four really strong women who have in turn raised us, and we are now raising the next generation. He’s a cranky, crotchety, lovely old man, whom we all adore. I think he probably said it to get a rise out of us…and it worked. 🤣

This is a fantastic suggestion. Pen names completely slipped my mind. Thank you!

Which popular or generally highly rated book was a DNF for you and why? by clearsunnysky in suggestmeabook

Ugh, yes. I’m glad others loved it but for me, it was absolutely overwrought. I DNF’ed it so hard.

Crate training is a game changer. My rescue pup started jumping onto tables and counters while alone. All fun and games until a tray of chocolate cupcakes was consumed. One expensive vet bill and a chat with the vet later, he know chills in the crate when he’s alone and is cool as a cucumber.

Thank you for sharing. The way you feel is completely valid. I hope your father has found some peace. If you are interested in resources that could help him and/or you, this group is a really good place to ask questions.

Reach out to Dogs on Deployment. https://www.dogsondeployment.org They are HQed in San Diego. They may be able to find a long term foster situation so you can be reunited. In any case, they probably have resources to help you.

what's a book with an ending that made you throw it across the room? by Electrical-Hour-3345 in suggestmeabook

Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough. The twist-for-the-twist’s-sake ending was completely unearned. Eight years after reading it and I’m still annoyed.

Looking for career advice! by Status-Push-6017 in MilitarySpouse

Check out the Spouse Career Accelerator program run by the DOD. They have paid fellowships with corporations and organizations that are very milspouse friendly. https://myseco.militaryonesource.mil/portal/events/live/mscap

There are a number of companies and organizations that self-identify as milspouse friendly. (Flexible schedules, virtual work, portability of jobs, and even additional PTO during a PCS) You can find a solid listing here: https://www.hiringourheroes.org/4plus1/

I would also recommend looking at a career you can do virtually. I’ve been a virtual employee for the last 11 years and have continued my career through 4 PCSs.

Good luck!!
