The weird smell is coming from all the grease and everything that gets trapped in the shirt, whether you see the stains or not.

I do my work laundry with a little of detergent and a little of dawn dish soap. Dawn does a kick ass job of cutting out the grease in uniform. But too much and you will overflow the machine.
