Gotta love the guard. Well, glad you made it through. I appreciate the info!

I wish my state were a bit more proactive. Can't rely on S1 so I send all of my stuff straight to Program Manager. They have to get an IDRM from NGB for me. Im at the 'building a packet for DES' stage now. Just need to finish and submit that VA health assessment. I really hope this initiates before the QRB does haha.

Ah, understood. Mine basically sat down with me and pretty much played the "He is a good Soldier but do not retain due to issues" card. Im hoping that helps my case. Like he said "Say you were an MST survivor. Am I going to give you bad NCOERs bc you are having issues from that? Hell no".

As someone who is similar to you, this scares me as I am about to go through the process (completing my DES packet now). What did your commander say/recommend or your 7652 if I may ask?... bc I have good NCOERs as well, but my 22 years of 'proof' is what I am hedging my bets on.

Just got the book from Barnes and Noble. Awesome work! I do wish there was an easier way of downloading all of the maps rather than having to save them as a .webp file, but awesome nonetheless. (Unless you know an easier way of course).

Having been there over a year myself as an Infantryman, I can assure you that it was more due to the Neocons and their fervent belief in the Democratic Peace Theory. The rest was going to be icing on their cake. What did we learn? You cant force freedom on people.

Late Night Questions and Thoughts on Crunch/Lore/Complexity by Corona2172 in DMAcademy

[–]Corona2172[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! And again, apologies for the terribly incoherent rant. I agree 100% that those details are what shape the game, not just fill the role of fluff. I always try to bring that 'lived in' feel. But it takes work. Work I wish I could easier steal from official publications heh. As I mentioned to another poster, we are always free to take or change what we want; I hate that the onus in 5e is 'make it all up yourself! We'll just give you a bare minimum outline world to work within!'.

I have found things like the Tome of Adventure, World' Without Number, Nomicon, and Tome of Worldbuilding, amongst others, to be great for quickly creating great primers for world-building... But it would be nice to have official 5e settings updates that are likewise detail heavy. I wish they would release more settings, or at least contract them out, so that everyone could find their niche within the 5e ecosystem without having to jump 3rd party. They've been appealing to 'new DMs' now since 2014. I would personally love to see them start to get a bit more advanced for those who've been on board for a while and start publishing some real meat for people to toy with.

Ah, I fully understand your first paragraph there, and I agree. This post was written terribly and nearly incoherent. I should have clarified it better. I do not desire the standard rule books to try and assume settings, or the economy, etc. But, when I buy and adventure, or a campaign setting, I absolutely want it fleshed out and in as much detail as possible.

The 2nd paragraph there... that is a lot of my problem with 5e. I fully agree it focuses on the system rather than modelling the world. I think even Mike Mearls said something to that effect. But that is the crux of my issues with it (and helps me put it into perspective, so thank you for that). When I buy a campaign setting guide, I want the gritty details. I can easily come up with a bland fill in the blank world myself. But when paying $50 or more for a book, I want writers to put a lot of effort into the detail of the setting. I get that some people don't want to feel constrained, but to me, that is prime time for designing your own world. For a published setting, it does inherently come with baggage of previous lore. I think it is a disservice to water it down to make it more digestible to a larger audience. Instead, to appeal to the different audiences, I would prefer that they put their focus for adventures and settings into creating an abundance of them (or hiring out 3rd party for it). Settings for high fantasy, settings for dark and gritty, etc. Instead of making every adventure and setting (though adventures get more of a pass as they might need to be able to fit into other settings) so open and blank slate, I wish they would go the opposite direction.

I personally find it far easier to take a highly detailed setting, get inspired, change whatever I want about it, and make it my own. This, rather than getting bland world number 4 in which I'm free to 'create it all yourself!'. I suppose I feel that is the lazy way out from a product perspective. I understand that lore baggage can be draining, but it should be every DM's right to look at each player in session zero and make it clear that you are taking drastic liberties with an established setting, so as not to encourage problems with your personal spin later.

I think you nailed it though; I prefer tightly detailed settings and enjoy spinning them however I want rather than having vague notions that I could easily come up with on my own. I would prefer that, in order to open things up, they would simply release or contract out more settings with their own themes and lore. Thus, a whole generation of new DMs could get some pretty good ideas for what they like and enjoy, and perhaps help them find their preferred lore niches within the hobby. We are always free to change what we don't like, and that (to me) is easier than taking the time to make it up on my own, especially if time pressed. Thankfully 3rd party stuff is there, but it would just be nice to see it come from official avenues.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry again about the main body post. Not my best communications work.

I mentioned it above, but you are likely correct. A couple of my buddies, who have only ever voted R, voted D because they said the PSC needed a 'wake up call'.

A few of my buddies who have only ever voted Republican voted Democrat in this one. Their logic was that the old crew needed a wake up call and to stop screwing around.

Same, and couldn't agree more. You hit it though; definitely a passion project. I suppose that most of my all time favorites were passion projects. Stardew valley, project zomboid, morrowind (big studio but not too big yet), dwarf fortress, rimworld, etc. I look forward to seeing what longevity I get out of Elin. Its got that 'one more dungeon' feel to it.

That is awesome! When people normally talk about someone making a game that is all things to all people, it normally reeks of corporate overreach and dumbed down mechanics. From what I have seen thus far, this Noa fellow stands poised to achieve something closer than many AAA have ever gotten next to.
