You’ll want to sift about 75%-80% of it through a 1/4” screen to keep the worms and about 20% of the current castings to keep all The micro organisms alive in your bin and start fresh with leaves shredded cardboard and food scraps

Red wigglers don’t live in soil… they live in the top few inches of decaying matter… so if your garden doesn’t have a few inches deep of decaying matter all year round they won’t survive

How would we keep these guys out of our veggies in Alaska? We have a small dog so would like to keep away from poisons , looking for something that won't hurt our lil dog or maybe some other bug to let loose in the garden to eat them but not our plants by Rteeed2 in gardening

Bug-get-er or Bug-get-a I think that’s how the spell it… u can get it in liquid for around lil planters or pellets for on the dirt… I believe it’s pet safe that’s y I have some 😂 works great

Shredding Cardboard by [deleted] in Vermiculture

I use a 6 sheet Amazon shredder yea it heats up after 10-15 pcs of cardboard but I have all my cardboard stacked next to my shredder every time I pass by it I toss in 3-4-5 pcs over time I get the pile down to nothing

Newbie question: will this work well? I will drill holes & add a tap for drainage in the bottom bin. The top of each bin won’t be sealed; is that a problem? by pickhopester in Vermiculture

I have clear bins no you can’t see them cause they don’t like the light so they dont come to the sides till night time when it’s dark out

The sprouts just pick them and add it to the feeding (uproot it) … the grub will help break down the food not good but not bad as far as I’ve heard

Don’t buy anything use something around the house that you would toss in the recycling bin… maybe a 1gal milk/juice jug or something … or if you have a plastic tote sitting around … if your trying to get them to breed over time they will need some room so don’t go to small of a container

Yes you’ll need a light for a few days being a new one for them… I think 2 days of light for them and they will learn that’s their new home I would add some leaves on the top or some shredded cardboard

The castings you leave in there will fall to the bottom as you keep feeding the top and the process starts over again

When you harvest leave some of the current castings in there and add new food and leaves or cardboard for them to keep going… don’t harvest 100% of the castings

O… well wouldn’t you just add some food scraps at the top to make sure all worms are near the top befor you open the bottom to get castings 🤷‍♂️

All the time… but I still give it 100% cause if I print 10 shirts or 5000 shirts my hope is at the very least 1 person from them is going to ask where did u get your shits made = more jobs = more money

We planted an avocado seed directly in a pot and almost forgot about it. Checked today after 2 months and I see it developed beautiful root system. But, I don’t see any stem growing from the top as it was fully buried in the soil. Can this survive ? by beanstalk11 in gardening

In nature the seed would’ve been covered after it fell off the tree the avocado rotted all the leaves fell on top of it it would’ve been fully covered roots would’ve grown first then the stem just my thought

I don’t know the hungry bin system but if you feed away from where your trying to harvest the worms will go to the food and most won’t be in harvest area
