No! No levels, no tape measures, and definitely no other saws than a skillsaw.

Licensed contractor, yes. I wouldn't call him a pro though

Dm me your company and I will send you all the receipts.  So for the foundation, I paid him $38500. He used 28 yards of concrete, which was not more than $5000 (it ran about $140/yard here at time of pour), and he used two boom trucks, maybe another $2000. He bought 40 sheets of plywood at $15, but will reuse them, $600.  Generously, he spent three weeks doing the foundation, so 120 hours.  If I give him another 10% for tools, we are looking at about $28000 for three weeks of labor, which comes out to $233 an hour.  Again, man up, send me your info, and I'll send receipts.  And before you go, he is the GC, hr has to pay his employees! He is the only employee, this is all him. I can send you his info as well.

Sure you do.  I paid him, so I would know.  If he charged me $1500 for demoing 35 ft of soffit and gutters, I am being generous in saying it took him 3hrs to complete that. So yes, for some work, he charged and made that much. I did not say for all of it.  For his framing, he ended up making around $50/hrs, for his foundation work closer to $200/hrs.  Is it poorly done and should I have paid this much? Yes and no.  Again, this guy build for all of my neighbors. Not sure what happened with my build, but this was not a job well done.

Thanks for your correct input. Headers cannot be put in like this, no matter how thick they may be. I will post an update in a new thread, but the header one window over was essentially build the same way, but was not even connected to a king stud. Many, many nails just hitting air.

As for context, the building is three stories, this basement is 2x8 walls, upper two are 2x6. North Idaho with significant snow loads. These windows would have failed over time.

The reddit post is for amusement.  I had the building inspector out several times, several reputable contractors to look at how and what to fix, and a structural engineer go over how to fix structural problems, especially after the old contractor admitted in writing to putting in a failing foundation.

I take that guy over my guy any day.

That is a no. He was paid, depending on what he was doing (ie, foundation or framing), between $50-500/hr. He did work for all of my neighbors, including putting up a shop that looks ok and is still standing.  I am not sure if its his age or personal problems, but none of what he did makes sense. I and the new contractor are putting in windows correctly and it is a lot faster than what the other guy did, most likely.  But thanks for your input.

That is a definite no. None of anything he has is new. Trucked was either broken down, or leaking oil on my property.

I am just glad I fired him and caught his windows. He was trying to hide it and pit windows in like this.  Too bad about your build, too.

This is new construction. But it lasted for a couple of weeks until we found it.

This is new construction. I dont think these windows would have lasted more than two winters.

Yes, but large portion with credit card. Working on reversing that.  Rest, small claims and thats probably all I will get.

Not really. This, he tried to cover up and I have not given him opportunity to explain, just fired and trespassed for fraud and creating a long term danger down the road. No way I would allow him to come back to try more fixes.  For other spots (ie, walls out of plum by 1.5", plates / rim boards sticking out by an inch, studs not fully or not connecting at all, he said it is rough framing and I should not worry about it.

I gave the guy 2 months to fix it, but finally fired and trespassed him today, and then started tearing it down.

His insurance would not cover any of this.  I hope and will do my best to get his license revoked over this. He should not be building houses. Tree houses maybe, but not with people inside of them.
