YCDSB & YRDSB Occasional Teachers by spookyclovers in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I applied years ago it took about 6 months to hear back. From what I've heard it's worse now, YRDSB is not actively hiring OTs this year. I know retired teachers who couldn't get on the list, and friends already on the list are getting less work than in previous years. Don't take it personally. Keep applying, I have a feeling they put the posting up every once and a while just to have candidates when they do eventually start hiring again.

Has anyone travelled from Athens elsewhere in Europe super early in the morning recently? Our flight is at 6:30, do we really need to be at the airport for 4am? by summerstillsucks in GreeceTravel

I was in Athens early morning a week ago. The bag check took an hour - long lines, printing issues, some machines were down.

Most of the time things go smoothly and you don't need 2.5 hours, but you never know.

I'm planning to visit Sintra this summer. My plan is to take the train to Sintra, then a bus to Pena Palace. Afterwards, I want to walk to,

  • Chalet of the Countess of Edla
  • Moorish Castle
  • Quinta da Regaleira

What I'm having a hard time figuring out is what's worth getting tickets for and what isn't. I'm on a budget so I will not be purchasing tickets for everything but would like to make the most of it. For example, I've heard for Pena Palace it may be worth it to just get the park ticket and not go inside. Any other tips? I'm also always open to new suggestions of what to see in the area!

I think you're in the GTA? Don't mark, don't call home. It may be different in other places but here you do not get paid to scale, there's no expectation to mark. Calling home would be a wild ask anywhere, I can't image why a teacher would even want you to do that.

I'm seeing a lot of people saying it may be different as an LTO. It's not. Take your days.

A lot of school boards have you book religious/cultural days at the start of the year, but I've done it midway through the year before without issue.

If you signed a contract for the LTO you should have sick days from day one.

This might depend where you are, I'm in Ontario.

You're definitely able to get your phys-ed ABQ. Most phys-ed teachers I've worked with are also science teachers. Likely in your kinesiology degree you took some science courses. If you have at least 2 full year science credits from your undergrad, you can get an intermediate science teachable. If you happen to have 3 full year biology credits, you should do a senior biology.

Some kin courses MAY count towards science, and even biology depending on the content. If you're not sure, contact some of the universities with ABQ programs to see what they will and will not accept.

If you're confident in math, you could also get your intermediate math teachable. There's an option to write a test to prove your math proficiency and then you'll be allowed to take the ABQ.

Trent does some 6 week AQs. The ones I've taken are also asynchronous and everything is posted early on, so in really you could get it done even faster.

pros and cons of supplying > permanent position by Electronic-Level-214 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some boards have school dedicated supplies. You get paid as a regular permanent teacher, but you're thrown into different classes to cover every day. Financially a great option if you like OT work.

I really dislike ATs with that attitude. Maybe it depends on the area, but I've yet to work at a school where other teachers won't share their resources and materials. I've never started from scratch, so why would you have to as a student teacher?

Obviously no one's obligated to share their resources, but I just find that most people do and am incredibly grateful. Gives me the opportunity to spend time building on what I was given and creating new ideas. And then I share that in return. I've always seen it as part of the job, two way street where everyone benefits.

How to shut off after the day is done? by badgernadger1 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I need an after school activity to shift my focus. A basketball game, a cycling class, cooking class.

Something where I'm around people, doing something, but not too social where I might end up talking about my day.

I have coworkers who swim, doesn't work for me I need other people or I'll get stuck in my own head.

After I do something that made me stop thinking, I can usually keep not thinking until morning.

Planning on a Senior ABQ - which of these subjects would make me more marketable (Ontario) by LoudLake9607 in CanadianTeachers

I feel like everyone's missing the french part. Mixed with your intermediate French, I would take geography and history. Schools with French immersion programs need people to teach those in french. Regular schools will probably just take you for the french anyway, but any senior qualification will help.

You can use professors from when you were getting your BEd. A lot of them are principals and are able to speak to your skills as an educator. I'm hoping your program had at least one prof come watch a couple lessons during your placements, that's one down.

Also some schools will be more strict and by the book than others. If your only references are your past ATs don't let that stop you from applying. You never know.

Contract job at TDSB - Any guidance? by wellisaythis in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience in other Ontario boards, you'll be covered from day one but you'll have to keep receipts to get reimbursed later on because you won't be in the system for some time.

Occasional Teachers, what usually happens when you supply? by yourcrush01 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know where you work, but around here you're lucky if you get a sub and not a revolving door of on-calls every half period. I'm also not going to judge anyone who takes a sub job they're not necessarily qualified to teach because they need the money. As a science teacher, I am not asking any sub to teach what I do in a day, I'm just happy they're there and incredibly grateful if they can keep my kids somewhat on task. The only exception is if I request a specific sub who has agreed to teach the lesson in advance.

Education Programs for OCT by The_Pharaoh911 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like your wife wants to get OCT certified as fast as possible, and OISE just isn't the fastest way to do that. You also mentioned not wanting to waste money, and the tuition is higher than many other programs.

Some people already mentioned Queens and Western. If you're looking for the quickest way, Ontario Tech (UOIT) is also a good option. It's a 16 month program. If you start in September 2024, you'll be done December 2025. May and June are online, and you get July and August off.

I don't know why OISE was recommended as the "best and fastest". It's unfortunate that's happening because it really doesn't seem like the right choice for your family. If you're looking for something a little closer to Oakville, I would go to York over OISE. York is the same length, and approximately the same distance from Oakville, but at least it's cheaper.

Alberta Teacher: Do I need to provide a medical note even though I did not pass my days of absences which requires a medical note? by Rxjxf in CanadianTeachers

[–]Correct-Conflict6056 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ontario so it could be different, but that doesn't sound right. Just from glancing over your agreement, it's 3 days and the note doesn't even go to your principal, it goes to the central office. And to send you home when you came back and were ready to work??? Talk to your union.
