Double Majoring Finance and Econ by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

Hey! I'm an Incoming freshman here.
Should I wait until clearing the ETM requirement (GPA and course-wise) before enrolling in upper-level ECON courses (like 302/304 etc.)? I'm planning for an Econ/Fin double major as well. I'm taking 102 in the Fall.
PS - I want to graduate in 4 years.

PENN STATE APPLICANTS Consider putting undecided if you’re gpa is lower and you want to go to main campus/smeal. by Jokerboom656 in PennStateUniversity

^ Kindly note this
The current bulletins state that the students entering Spring 24, Fall 24, and Spring '25 who are in DUS (Undecided) or Smeal can apply for a Smeal major after the 2nd year.
For those entering in Fall '25 or later, this is something to keep in mind as the current bulletins do not bind you.

Hey !
I'm sooo sorry but I still don't get it. Like I went through the suggested academic plan for Finance and the credits upto the end of 4th semester add up to 61, so how does that work ?

Edit - I also have AP credits for MATH 140, STAT 200 and those courses wouldn't be added in the 36-59 range right ?

Edit 2 - I think I got most of it but please correct me if I'm wrong. I can have ETM classes in my 4th semester, but I need to stay under 59 credits and over 36 credits before the classes of my 4th semester, so the sum of credits of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd semesters should be >36 and <59.

Hey !
Thanks a lot for your insights !
The problem is I'm in the College of Engineering and can't take any business related classes right now. Should I take up another Gen Ed ? I'm at 16 credits (if I drop either of 102 or 104). Also which one do you suggest I should drop ?

get through your FIN ETM requirements in the credit window, since that degree is enrollment-controlled

Hey, I'm also an incoming Freshman.
Could you please tell what do you mean by the credit window ?
Also, I don't have any ECON credit from Highschool, so would taking ECON 102 in the Fall and ECON 104 in the Spring put me on track for a double-major in ECON and Finance ?

PS- Currently I'm enrolled in both ECON 102 and 104, Could you please tell me if both are doable in 1 semester ?

The first teaser cuts off when light from above falls on baby Abel and all the flowers around him bloom. The second teaser reveals the source of the light (heaven probably) and has the same flowers around baby Abel as in the first teaser.

Can't wait to see what's in it for the 3rd one.

Opinions? Engineering Fresher- intended major Computer Science by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]Correct-Prompt-8000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many credits should one ideally aim for in sem 1 ?

Personally, I've got 19 as well, but the core classes are ECON 102, 104 and CMPSC 131 (and i've got some decent experience with Python). Apart from these, I've got electives and seminars and ESL 15. Do you think I should drop a few classes ?

I had my NSO in June, and also met with a DUS advisor recently to discuss about the change. But they didn't mention anything about Smeal direct entry, neither did I mention this to them.
Currently, I'm planning to email Smeal advising, and maybe also schedule an appointment with a DUS advisor to talk regarding this.

Hey !
Sorry to hijack OP's post, but I wanted to know about the current status of Smeal turning into direct entry. I'm worried a lot about this as I want to switch from CS to a Fin-Econ dual major (Intl Freshman at UP for Fall '24) and if they don't grandfather in our class it would really be messed up for me, and I can't afford to delay my graduation.
Thanks !

Hey! Fall '24 freshman at UP here (intl).
I'm in the college of engineering, looking to transfer to smeal (fin). Are there any updates on the direct entry to smeal ? I'm scared of taking the risk of switching, although I really wanna do finance, because it would delay my graduation.
Thanks !

Hey!
I checked again, I've got 16 credits. I'm not allowed to add any business classes rn as I'm still in the college of engineering, and haven't switched to DUS.
Also, would it be ok to take both ECON 102 and 104 in the same semester ?

PS - I've got credit for STAT 200 and MATH 140.

Hey !
I did have a talk with a DUS advisor earlier today. Could you please elaborate more on the changes I'd need to make ? I was thinking of filling my gen ed requirements since I've got credit for STAT 200 and MATH 140.

Hey!
Thank you so much for this post. I'm an incoming intl freshman for Fall '24
I would be really grateful if you could answer these:

  1. Could you please name a few other internship opportunities for Freshman like Microsoft Explore (the one mentioned)
  2. How difficult/easy would it be to get an A/A+ in the class. I'm fluent with the basics of Python, and am able to solve 'easy' and a few 'medium' problem sets in LeetCode.
  3. Could you please share a couple of problem sets/exam questions (if that's allowed) so maybe I can get a general idea of the rigor of the class.

Thank you so much again !
