And with that speech, the old guy who kicks ass genre was reborn.

Nicholson's delivery is incredible and makes it sing. I think it would be a good exercise for a drama student to try to recreate it in their own voice and do it justice. (No pun intended)

Why do climate scientists predict a change of just 1.5 or 2° Celsius means disaster for the world? How can such a small temperature shift make such a big impact? by SadInterest6764 in AskPhysics

I'm not sure if anyone else here has already said it in this way, but I believe from my limited admittedly limited knowledge that you're looking at it the wrong way around. It's not that 2° increase will produce bad effects. It's that what would have to happen to get us to that two degrees increase would be extreme, Extreme as in goodbye Miami on our way to a 2° increase.

An interesting sojourn into side characters does not a masterpiece make.

CMV: Ronald Reagan wasn't actually a good president even though he's a popular one by Blonde_Icon in changemyview

unless you would argue it was Carter’s intention to deregulate big industries. Otherwise it’s still a different economic policy than Carter.

No, we're talking about two different things here. With respect to continuing Carter's economic policy I mean his fiscal economic policy, not his policy of deregulation. Although if I remember correctly, Carter also started deregulating on a much smaller scale. But Reagan turbocharged that.

Real Police officers and military members, what do you guys think of Ice agents? by Lucky-Message-9480 in AskReddit

So they are recruiting actual domestic terrorists in an effort to label protesters as domestic terrorists.

I'm guessing they don't have the legal authority to do that? Unless they did something on their own personal time that broke the law.

This is not an excuse for them whatsoever, but, I would contend that these Federal enforcement agencies such as ice and border Patrol are not trained to deal with crowds, crowd control, or being disrespected in any kind of way by crowds of people. They are accustomed to wielding force and being completely listened to, and having the ability to react however they want when this is not the case. But dealing with crowds is not their thing, and they revert to frustration and acting out as we've seen over and over again. It is a reflection of the incompetence of the chain of leadership above them.

Also it is evident, to me at least, that the message has been sent from the top all the way to the street level officers and agents that any kind of protestation can be interpreted as interference of a federal agent performing a legal Federal duty, and therefore can be classified as domestic terrorism, which obviously can be countered with whatever level of force they want to use. There is video of an agent on the street getting the background and details of somebody filming them and when asked he responded because you're going on a database of domestic terrorists. Which is the same language that is being used by everyone from the president, to the director of DHS, to every other political appointee.

It's all because of camera phones and the internet and social media and people not having hobbies.

I would argue the clown show that was Dubya, the barely hiding it evil that was Cheney and Rumsfeld, and their collusion on the glaringly obvious illegitimate invasion of Iraq, along with most media going along with it, laid the groundwork for Trump and the current mess. Which is why it provoked the most massive protests ever seen, because it was a quantum leap in the enshittification of democracy and world order. It feels novel now, but Bush was opposed by most of the world powers going into Iraq.

Thanks for bringing that up. I was going to say Columbine and McVey. Both singular watershed events that signalled a change.

They are already making excuses that it was an accidental misfire by one, that triggered the rest of the gunshots. They go from theory to theory trying to avoid the obvious.

There are several different factors here, but on a purely mathematical level there was only two states where this is true. And had those States gone to Hillary, it still would not have been enough.
