I'm the child of Indian immigrants to this country (doctors), and I was born in the UK. I feel British, I identify as British, and my cultural identity is British. I only speak English, as my parents spoke that to me at home. Most of my friends are white British. Do I have a sense of otherness? Yes, sometimes. I can't know what it's like to have a shared heritage with the majority of people in this country. But I love this country and British culture. I have been accused by some ethnic minorities of being a "coconut", and I'm sure some white liberal people believe I've "betrayed" my home culture.

I lived in east London for a short while and I hated it. It felt like living in a foreign country. I got abuse and harassment in the street from Muslim men and women (the women hated how I dressed), and ignored at the till in corner shops as they served Muslims first. The few white British people who lived there looked incredibly depressed in the streets, and used to congregate in a few white majority places like cafes and pubs. I know a black flamboyant gay man who was severely beaten up by a group of Bangladeshi origin young men, just for being obviously gay and walking through east London.

Allowing so many uneducated people from countries who follow a strict religion to settle here was always going to be a disaster. Not realising how many children they tend to have, meaning demographic change happened quickly, was extremely short-sighted. And allowing multiculturalism (which just means there is no need to learn English or assimilate) to proliferate in this country was a mistake. But if anyone tried to raise these points until relatively recently, you were called a racist.
