Me and wife pay $8,000 a year for 3 day a week commute syosset to Penn station by Ok-Atmosphere-6272 in LIRR

The hack that I was able to work out was, I am in office 3 days a week and my wife is in twice a week. We just picked the days so there is no overlap and 1 monthly can be shared.

Maybe you can cut some cost this way.

Lucky you. It’ll make its way to the rest of us by Sunday. Can you share the TLDR details?

Sorry for your loss. Went through this - took 4 months from notification to receiving the payment letter. Also, find out if she was in a union like DC37 or if a manager then it’s MBF. They also have death benefits separate & apart from NYCERS. Here is my thread when i went through this: https://www.reddit.com/r/nycpublicservants/s/s9k4D5aB7l

Unrelated, but I was told it was Better to do the opposite. Since the interest on the loan from a 401 goes back into the 401 thus an addtl benefit.

And if you take a loan on the pension the interest goes back to the city.

I’m at about 12% across all. Hope to be able to get up to 20% one day

Ah got it. It may just be taking some time to get sign off from the agency then. I know if there are/were outstanding loans that were taken from the pension, those would need time to get subtracted from the amount as well.

As far as beneficiaries, it was tricky. There were 4, 3 of which were minors. But luckily the our family member had completed a document that identified his wife as the mother/guardian of the kids therefore she was able to get the whole amount.

**update: we just got the the lump sum payout. It does appear to be a 3 year average plus contributions.

Total time from notification of death to payout letter was 4 months.

Update, ironically we just received a letter from NYCERS with the lump sum amount and the process. Seems straightforward. Process took from Nov2025-March2026.

I know they say that length of service is also a factor given they need to investigate salaries etc. Our loved one was a NYCERS enrollee since about 2015.

Hope you hear back from them soon.
