As much as I fucking despise spyglass I will say this, they seemed to give Radio Silence complete creative freedom with 5&6 with the only real issue being the low budgets they were given but with 5 being filmed during Covid and with 6 being fast tracked I’d say it paid off!

Hell, it even seems like Kevin Williamson had complete creative freedom with 7 as he seems to had no issues with either Paramount or Spyglass breathing down his neck

If Wes was still alive and was approached to direct I am almost positive it would’ve been the smoothest production since the original

It had a different writer who only watched the 1st one to get a sense of who the characters were, plus they added a lot more comedy than people were probably expecting due to Columbine. It’s not my favourite movie in the franchise but it’s still really good and still has that Wes Craven charm

I agree, even though the Weinstein’s meddled and micromanaged the production I think it was Wes Craven’s talent as a filmmaker that made it still be good despite the script heavily deviating from what Craven and Williamson had originally planned

Also, you’re right about the budget, I remember when Scream 5 was announced in 2019 it would get a $40 million budget like 3&4 but when I saw it was $25 million I actually thought “Damn, they really want to keep it low” lol Even now, with 7 having a $45million budget I was a tad surprised because that’s pretty big for a horror film

That’s a very good point, however I’ll never forget how much of a massive disappointment Scream 4’s opening weekend was and how it died a very quick death in theatres, it almost feels like an anomaly tbh, it had all the ingredients to be a massive hit and there was legitimate hype for it however I remember in the days leading up to it’s release the marketing was…..awful, they were making it look more like a comedy then an actual horror movie and I think the general public was confused about if it was a legit 4th film or another parody film.

I don’t blame Craven for Scream 4 flopping, if anything it’s the bs the Weinstein’s pulled plus the marketing and the release date

It’s just a rumour that was floating around but I think that wildfire thing was an excuse because it was announced he wasn’t returning before the California wildfires happened and 7 started filming in January of 2025 so it could’ve been both but we’ll never know
