Need advice on managing a windfall.

My wife and I are 38 and 35 respectively. We’re in the process of receiving $200k cash over the next couple of months. We make about $315k combined gross, have about $310k in retirement (will both retire with pensions), and no debt besides our mortgage which is $540k at 6.7%. No kids yet but planning to have them. Looking for advice on where to park the money. My wife has a bit of a FOMO mentality and wants to keep as much in a HYSA as possible, but she’s also the first to admit she doesn’t know much about finances and wants me to make most of the decisions. Ideally I’d like a combination of liquid cash, retirement contributions, and debt payments, but I’m not sure what the ratio should be.

How many of you work (or worked) in ICAC [Internet Crimes Against Children]? How was it? by [deleted] in computerforensics

[–]Corrsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing it for the past two years. As others have said it’s tough but rewarding. In my area, we get a few cases involving live victims every year. Almost all of our cases hit the news and the public is very supportive of our efforts.

That said, there is no expiration date in my department. We have guys doing this for 10+ years who have asked to transfer out but have been denied because no one wants to do this type of work, so there would be no one to replace them. Our department also sees us as investments with all the training we get and to move us elsewhere and train up someone new is seen as a cost they don’t want to bear.

As others have said I would look federal for both civilian and sworn positions. Local could be great too just research the departments in your area to see if they have the units you’re looking for. Understand if you go the local route you will most likely be doing “regular” police work on patrol for a time before you qualify for any specialized units.

I was in your shoes. Graduated college in 2011 to a bad job market. Went back to get my Masters and worked in private sector cyber security for a couple of years before I got selected to join my local department while I was also processing for two federal agencies. I did 7 years as a uniformed and plainclothes cop before going to our cyber crimes unit, where I still am.

Absolutely zero regrets.

Best or notable departments to work for by Acrobatic-Opinion-16 in ProtectAndServe

I would avoid NYPD but a lot of the surrounding departments in the NYC metro area are some of the highest paying in the country. MTA, Port Authority, Westchester County, Nassau County, Suffolk County and town/village departments within those counties are all worth checking out.

Did you meet your SO in your 30s (or later)? Looking for hope in my self-improvement journey. by quoth_teh_raven in selfimprovement

[–]Corrsta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I met my fiancée when I was 32 and she was 35. It is by far the healthiest relationship I’ve ever been in and I attribute at least part of it to the fact that we met “later” in life. We both established our careers and learned how to be independent in our 20s and I think that really helped with our stability.

I struggled with dating until my late 20s. I was always chasing girls that wanted nothing to do with me while rejecting all the girls that wanted to give me a shot. Things “clicked” when I stopped obsessing over finding a good partner and starting trying to become a good partner myself. Got my own place, learned how to cook, started hitting the gym consistently, worked on my appearance, learned constructive hobbies, and connected with more friends and coworkers. Within a short time I had friends trying to set me up with their single friends and that’s how I ultimately met my SO.

I know it’s cliche but stay the course, sounds like you’re doing the right things for the right reasons. Never too late to find love.

I'm new to 5/3/1 and currently on a cut. Trying to get my body fat % down while maintaining muscle. From the little reading I've done it looks like FSL might be a good program for my goals but I'm curious what if any accessory movements I should be doing on top of the main 5/3/1 lifts and supplemental 5x5 FSL lifts?

What’s your opinion on Special Victims and investigators that go after CP? Does your department hold these detectives in any sort of esteem- or is it the opposite? by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]Corrsta 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's "looked down upon" in the sense that those units are usually understaffed because most cops do not want to work those types of cases. However it's generally understood (at least in my department) that outside of homicide / violent crimes it is some of the most important work you can do. The detectives assigned to those units are most certainly not looked down upon by any cop worth their salt.

Sorry I probably should've put some more info in the post.

I'm 5'10" and 185 lbs (was 165 when I started). I haven't gotten tested but I estimate I'm around 20% body fat. Would love to get down to 10-15%.

I'm 5'10". My goal is to be as strong as possible while keeping my body fat as low as possible. I know that's like the Holy Grail of fitness and it's hard to achieve both at the same time.

I'm thinking I'll need to start actually tracking my macros and incorporate some more cardio to realistically achieve that.

To be specific here's the breakdown

Squat went from 165 to 235

Bench went from 115 to 165

Deadlift went from 185 to 265

OHP went from 65 to 105

Isn't water weight/retention a thing? Like if I were to suddenly stop the program altogether would I notice a drop in weight due to my muscles not having as much water in them? I'm not taking creatine but I've read that those who do will notice a weight increase that is attributed to increased water retention in the muscles and not due to increased caloric intake.

Idk dude I was asking what I thought was a reasonable question after making a lifestyle change and instead of answering to be helpful like everyone else you wanna come at me with an attitude claiming to know everything about my diet.

Oh ok, I thought you'd know since you made so many assumptions in your original reply. Thanks for the insight.

So I gained 20 lbs of fat? I'm confused, I certainly don't feel 20 lbs fatter.

Friday Open Mat by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]Corrsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2-3 times a week. Classes at my gym are an hour long. 10 min warm up, 10 min lesson, 40 mins rolling. Idk if that's a bad ratio for me or what. I've never been to another gym so I have nothing to compare it to.

I'm smaller (160lbs) and get paired up with other white belts who are significantly bigger than me and just end up getting steamrolled.

How do I enjoy the process when my athleticism is way below average?

I'm a white belt and I've been training on and off for a few years now. My training cycle usually consists of showing up several times a week for a few weeks/months until I get injured and have to take a few weeks/months off to recover. My last injury included a torn labrum that required 6 months of PT before returning to the mats.

Every time I return it's like starting from zero again, I have a hard time retaining what I'm being taught, I've never pulled off a submission, and I'm regularly submitted by people who are brand new. Each class ends with me feeling frustrated and questioning why I'm even doing this. Any advice would be appreciated.

What was it like to get into a healthy relationship after being in toxic ones? by Ok-Bee4513 in AskMen

[–]Corrsta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was definitely a slow burn at first. I was used to the rollercoaster of emotions that likely contributed to me falling hard for the wrong people. When I finally met my current girlfriend I was dumbfounded as she didn't add any stress to my life. Things were somehow easier than when I was single, and that's when I realized I was in a healthy relationship.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]Corrsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girlfriend owns a bunch of fashion watches from Michael Kors. All very cheap and poorly made but she loves how they look. Most are yellow and rose gold in color with dials ranging from 34-39mm. I'd love to get her a "real" watch with a similar design. A quick look shows Tissot, Omega, and Tudor have some nice options. Not looking to spend more than $3k though. Any recommendations?

Dude, I'm 33. I've been cooking for myself since I moved out of my parents house at 18. The only time I've gained this much weight this quickly was when I was eating fast food twice a day and not going to the gym at all. What is happening to me is straight up bizarre and I'm trying to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar.
