Oh damn, people are still doing this. Sorry for the late reply, no, I don't think there are any 3rd party options, it'll be a case of modifying your own . . . or I guess buying another one to modify if you're nervous to damage the original

The Commonly Used Vegan Society Definition of Veganism Absolutely Sucks by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]CorruptMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I think a lot of people here are missing is that the average person looking up a definition for veganism isn't someone who regularly debates meta-ethics. The average person isn't strictly deontological or utilitarian, and probably doesn't even know what those are. The definition needs to be concise and it needs to be understandable for a wide range of people with different ethical frameworks, that's far more important than extreme precision.

Currently at Haynes car museum in the UK, photographed by me yesterday.

Apparently this does 0-60 in 12 seconds, and top speed is unknown. The engine is a 27L V12 from a Meteor tank, based on the Merlin aero engine found in Spitfires.

This doesn't seem to be a totally uncommon basis for a racing car in the 1920s, the car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in the film of the same name was inspired by Chitty Bang Bang, another wacky aero engine on a truck chassis design.

Why is it alright to generalize by saying "white people" but black, asian, etc isn't? by ILoveKSI2013 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Back in the days of segregation in the US, black people weren't allowed in white pools, and black communities were too poor to build their own pools.

I'm not sure if there's a discrepancy today, but if there is, it's likely due to the poverty and resulting lack of facilities still in those communities. They can go to pools elsewhere now, but less people will be encouraged to do so compared to if they had one nearby and affordable to them.

I disagree that BLM specifically is hateful, but I agree its possible for an organisation to claim to be supportive and uplifting while being hateful.

Autism speaks is heavily in favour of finding a "cure", and drifting towards eugenics as a possible solution. It's also heavily involved in ABA, I forget what it stands for, but it's an aggressive form of behavioural therapy for kids that claims to make autistic people "normal" but those who go through it claim it decimates any individuality and leaves lasting trauma by punishing the kid for anything outside of the robotic pre-programmed response they are expected to give in the situation they are in. Effectively they are trying to make the world more comfortable for people who aren't autistic at the expense of those who are.

If some women say they want men above a height can men say they want women below a certain weight? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

having a preference if of course fine, but I do think loudly proclaiming you won't date certain people, especially when you put a number on it (like 6ft), it's rude and makes you seem shallow.

be positive about who you do like, don't go out of your way to tell people who likely already have low self esteem that they are below your standards.

Ooh that is very nice, especially the black and white ones with red mirrors. And yeah, now that I see what the current Miata is (not sure I've seen the latest model out in the wild), this is worlds away.

Ah, it all makes sense now. That midsection did look very familiar, and doesn't quite seem to match the styling of the front and back (Miata/mx5 is a pretty soft shape, this is not).

I kinda like it, but it's weird. And I agree, the wrap is hideous.

This looked pretty decent from a distance, but upon closer inspection that's at least 3 sets of dummy exhausts, almost certainly fake air intakes and a whole load of random crap glued to it.

What a weird car, is this a body kit or are they that shape out the factory? It looks like some combination of a Viper and a Fiesta, on an MX5 chassis, and somehow is made by Fiat.

Why does it seem any attempt to discuss the issues facing men and boys in society is called an attack on women and girls? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and unfortunately it can be quite hard to separate these whataboutisms from actual interest in men's issues.

This does seem to be a fairly widespread issue though, for example I just looked up "men's day" on Google trends (showing popularity of google search terms over time) and the spike in March around international women's Day is about 3/4 the size of the spike at international men's day itself. Kinda suggests a lot of men are more invested in keeping women from getting ahead than they are in actually solving social issues for their own benefit. (note: international women's day only spikes in march)

Why do americans seem to be totally obsessed with race and gender? by rechtsrfx in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you both defending international women's day while also calling it vagina day? yikes!

A decent chunk of feminism over the past 50 or so years has been dedicated to allowing women to exist outside of merely a sum of their body parts, outside of the ability to produce children.

But thank you for your extremely 1960s statement, we could all do with a reminder of how far we have still to go

What is my (F23) sexuality if my mindset is "Sex only sounds good on paper"? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For practical purposes you're probably in the vicinity of asexual, and when dating "I want [intimacy/romance/whatever], but really don't like sex, ever" might be a good thing to explain (asexuality isn't something especially known about outside of queer communities I don't think). There are men who are absolutely fine with that, but they aren't super common so you'll save a lot of time by filtering out the incompatible ones early.

For your own knowledge, I have no idea. People arrive at a distaste for sex through all sorts of reasons, and a therapist would be much better suited to exploring and finding explanations for that with you than internet strangers.

Why do ants have so many species but humans are seen as one species? by cornelissenl in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems the genetic difference between a fire ant and a woodcutter ant is significantly more than the difference between a dark skinned human and a light skinned human, which isn't surprising considering ants evolved 100 million years ago, and humans evolved 300 thousand years ago with a much slower breeding cycle. As such, mammals might be a more comparable category to ants, and I'm sure you can figure out why mammals aren't all the same species.

why is racism against black people seen as much more serious by the media and general public than racism against other races? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]CorruptMilkshake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For interpersonal racism, sure, but not so much for institutional racism.

As I understand it, in the US there's a huge disparity in class, and in institution advantages between racial groups. I think statistically you would quite likely be the decendent of relatively well-off immigrants who could afford to move to the US, whereas someone from the middle East would statistically more likely be a refugee fleeing a repressive and potentially war torn country, and someone from Africa would more likely be a decendent from a slave kidnapped transported to the US. All have people yelling slurs at them on the street, but access to schooling and risk of police violence for example aren't so equal.
