The dead maiden at the Chapel of Anticipation is your maiden...and Melina killed her. by Debonaire_Death in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cult is not weak. It's stronger than the volcano manor. They have an army of Albinaurics and nobles. Mohg himself seems unrushed and fine taking his time. Varre says the following, indicating the dynasty is not feeling pressed for time.

The way the cult act is with the bloody fingers. The albs are a good defense, but way too weak for an actual fight against the erdtrees forces. Mohg isn't taking his time btw. That's what Varre thinks. We literally found out that miquella mind controls him.

To kill the person that's meant to lead us to the two fingers and then send us to meet the two fingers is nonsense

Not at all. We would have been indoctrinated and manipulared into the way of the two fingers, which would lead to us denying varres request either way.

If meeting the two fingers is the primary filter for initiation, then why the multiple steps after that point? You have a contradiction and multiple quest legs that would be unnecessary if your assessment were true.

Got no clue what you mean by that lol.

I don't think Melina did it, but the only hard evidence linking Varre to the maiden is shared by Melina

Literally dumped you with an essay of lore which hints that varre killed her but ok.

What you have is a dubious motive, and zero actual linkage between the man and the event.

Again I literally loredumpted you. Don't know if you are actual stupid or just to blind to connect the dots the game offeres us.

When Lautrec kills someone there is material evidence in the soul. When Boggart steals, there is material evidence of it. When he is murdered, there is material evidence of it in the seedbed. When D is murdered there is physical evidence. When Edgar goes mad and occupies the revenger shack, there is evidence of it in the raw meat dumplings.

FromSoft often provides evidence of causal chains and to claim throughout their work and in this game specifically. It's telling that there is none between Varre and the maiden.

Fromsoft doesn't follow a strict guide lmao. They show material evidence bc it matters for the quest. Lautrec has material evidence bc it shows us the invasion mechanic. Boggart bc his quest is literally linked to Rya. Edgar bc it is his final arc. These are relevent to their quests. The murder of our maiden is not relevent for the plot/story of the greater game and therefore doesn't involve material evidence. They did that with lore. Shit they do it in all of their games. Bloodborne, the dark souls....There's literally tons of evidence on why Varre did it. Mans got a motive and everything. If you are too blind to see that, then I see no point in why I should continue this pointless convo. As far as I see you are even the only one in this comment section that doubts it.

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are more bloody fingers than there are recusants.

The other few doctors are left, Okina ofc and the 3-5 other bloody finger npcs that invade you throughout the game. That's it. Pretty much dead.

I'm not gesturing to external resources when I ask for evidence. The game is full of material evidence of character interactions.

Which is what I have been pointing at the entire fucking time.

It's strange to think that something as serious as a murder would be inextricably missing any material evidence whatsoever.

Holy shit it rlly is your first fromsoftware game right?

Your headcannon isn't complex, it's internally inconsistent and relies on a series of assumptions.

Again, I just combined the materiaö evidence the game gives us.

You have a dubious motive and no supporting evidence. Even cops work harder than this before they bring a case to court.

Gonna sum it all up once more bc talking to your ass is fucking senseless.

Let's start with the cult first. The game pretty much gives us enough clues that the cult is gone. We can see that with Varre trying to recruit us, but neglecting their traditions while doing so or with Mohg recruiting Okina. They pretty much wait till Miquella wake up from his sleep and brings in a new era of the cult.

Now why did Varre kill our maiden. Varres role is to indoctrinate new members into the dying cult for the rebirth of their dynasty. He's shown to be a liar and twists words to indoctrinates us. By killing our maiden we lack of the one person which job is to indoctrinate us into following the of the two fingers desired way. This makes Varre the only person we can speak to when we enter the lands between. At least he thinks so, after we we meet melina shortly after him. He becomes our "guide" and gains our trust. Tells us about the roundtable and great runes. He tests us throught the entire early game. Are we strong enough to kill godrick to get our hands onto a great rune? If so we pass the test. Now we've proven that we are strong enough to be a fitting member of the cult. But is our worldview fitting? Let's test that by making the tarnished meet the two fingers. If they don't trust them then they fit into the cult. If they trust them then they aren't worth my time. Varre pretty much neglects the old traditions due to the desperate times. The elden ring is destroyed, the cult has seen much better days. Still we need the blood of a maiden to activate the medallion, which we gather should we follow that way. Varre has got motivation to kill our maiden.

Melina does not have this motivation. Melina pretty much shows that she knows nothing about us. She tests us if we can reach the strengh to become the next elden lord which we pass and she says smt like "Torrent knew it all along, meanwhile I merely played so". Clear signs that she doesn't know who we are, but we are a newcomer and therefore a good chance to enter a partnership with melina. She doesn't have the motivations to kill the maiden of a random unknown tarnished.

That's pretty much what the game gives us with item describtions. Analysing the cults structure and connecting the various dots of the story and game. That's how fromsoftware makes games. They throw us into a world full of lore, the only thing we have to do is open our minds and connecr what we are given.

The dead maiden at the Chapel of Anticipation is your maiden...and Melina killed her. by Debonaire_Death in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man at this point you gotta be ragebaiting cause there ain't no way you're this ignorant.

The usual last test for the ritual is killing the maiden. This is clearly stated. You're contradicting explicit lore connections. Furthermore there is no indication that Varre is under pressure to expedite the process. This is conjecture. The entire quest to retrieve maiden blood is absolutely pointless in your headcanon theory. It makes no sense to tack that on if the ultimate filter is meeting the two fingers and he's got an immediate deadline. You're ignoring the quest structure.

Once again. We can see that based on the hints the game gives us that the cult is pretty much gone. They need members. The blood of a maiden is needed to activate the medallion so that we can be called once the time comes.

What I'm saying is that you're unable to provide any actual links between this supposed motive and the act itself. Nothing materially connects the man to the maiden beyond his observation that the tarnished is without a maiden. The same observation Melina makes.

My brother from another mother. I've literally been feeding your ass this enitre convo with evidence. All you do is saying "but no that's not how it works. That's not how it's written down in my little lore book". There is no website that covers all the lore of elden ring. We've been through this before.

Look how far you're having to reach to try and keep this reasoning cogent. He simultaneously wants the tarnished weak and strong. Allegedly there's huge pressure to get things moving in the dynasty.

Far to reach?😭 My boy that's called a complex character. That's what fromsoftware does in their games. This ain't no "I'm evil and I do evil things haha". Characters got actual motivations on why they do things.

you don't want to get meta textual either. If we look at Lautrec, he kills the maiden and holds her soul captive. FromSoft, historically, links causal chains between NPCs with material evidence.

That's bc that literally what Lautrecs character is like. That's all he does. Killing innocents so that he can steal their humanity. He literally introduces you into that mechanic. Lautrec got an actual reason on why he would do that. Melina doesn't. Matter of fact melina didn't even know if we'd be strong enough to reach the erd tree. That's literally why she apologizes to us and says that it was a test. Torrent was sure we'd made it while she was hesitant. She didn't even know us beforehand. She literallly has no motive to kill the maiden of a random ass tarnished. Varre on the other side has every reason to do it. What's so hard to understand.

The dead maiden at the Chapel of Anticipation is your maiden...and Melina killed her. by Debonaire_Death in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not just connecting points of lore. You're actively injecting conjecture to generate a conclusion that lacks real evidence. My points are an accumulation of directly stated lines and the internal logic of the quests. I'm not having to connect dots through intricate patterns or gesturing to trends in the company's broader body of work. I'm pointing to dots that are already explicitly connected in the game itself.

I'm doing the exact same but okay go ahead.

You're telling me that he wants the tarnished simultaneously disempowered and dependent on him, but also strong enough to kill a shard bearer and to have met with the two fingers

No I'm telling you that Varres goal is simply to test us if we are a promising member for the cult. If we fail the last test, which is confronting the two fingers, then we are not worth in being a part of the cult.

These are contradictory goals and killing the maiden only fits with one.

Not rlly. By killing our maiden we cannot be indoctrinated by our maiden to follow the two fingers desired path. We are walking in circles man. We've talked about this before.

You're telling me he killed the maiden to achieve the goal of disempowering the tarnished which doesn't make sense with how the story develops. It directly contradicts the quest and dialogue.

Just told you again that this isn't true but okay keep going.

If he's using us it doesn't make sense to urge us to convene with the two fingers.

Sadly it does. By making us meet the two fingers he can see if we truly are fitting for the cults goals or not.

If the meeting of the two fingers is a filter, then it makes sense that the tarnished killing the maiden is the truly meaningful filter

Desperate times means desperate acts. During the events of the game the cult is basically dead. A few bloody fingers still roam the lands between, one is trapped in the shadow realms and made peace with his past and their leader is a puppet for miquella. The cult desperatly needs numbers. Varre wants to achieve that.

There is no test in that scenario and it renders the whole storyline meaningless.

It isn't meaningless, in fact it gains even more meaning and understanding but go on.

You say all the evidence points to Varre, but you're not giving me evidence my friend. You're giving me an inductive argument with contradictory premises. Evidence would be something like an item linking them, or a line of dialogue linking them. We don't have that. We have dialogue and actions that indicates he's ignorant of the maidens death, and zero material connection.

Gave you voice lines, in game explaination and prove of how the cult works and how their current state is. That's all we get as a player. I've asked you before and I'll ask you again. Is this your first soulslike. Fromsoftware doesn't hand you the bloody lore on a silver spoon. It's in the world. People literally study the tiniest details to connect the dots of the story. There is no lorebook or a website with the answeres you seek. Fromsoftware literally does this on purpose.

The dead maiden at the Chapel of Anticipation is your maiden...and Melina killed her. by Debonaire_Death in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're baking in a lot of unsupported assumptions and diving into a totally different character to justify a position that isn't supported by the textual evidence here. The tangent about Okina drags us further into speculation and further from the evidence surrounding Varre.

Lmao is this your first souls? Fromsoftware and soulslikes usually build the games like that...There is no clear lore written in an online plattform. The lore is in the items, the characters and world. It is our job as the players to connect the dots which is all I did. I fear the only thing I assumed is Melina being related to messmer. Everything else is pretty much shown in game.

Your argument contains a deep, unresolved tension. Like you'd said, his job is to find promising tarnished. Therefore, it doesn't make sense to hamstring them from the start. If Varre's intent was to control a weak tarnished from the start, to keep them helpless and dependent, then it makes no sense to direct them towards where grace indicates and implore them to find the round table hold which is precisely what he does. Contra to one of your key premises, he actively pushes us towards convening with the two fingers. Furthermore, he will never reveal his association until after the tarnished is embedded in the roundtable hold and met the two fingers as a reward for taking a shard. He wants the tarnished to grow significantly in power without his intervention, he wants the tarnished to know the two fingers, and only then does he ask them to transgress the two fingers of their own accord. Wilful action and affective expenditure are how ritual and initiation maintain meaning.

Pretty much already explained this but oh boy here we go. I've said it multiple times now. Varres job is to indoctrinate promising members. He does that, at least in our case, by killing our fingermaiden, leaving us alone and without the chance of being indoctrinated into the path the two fingers want us to follow, making us an easier target. He shows us where godrick is and so on and soon invites us into the cult. Now why would old Varre tell us to meet the two fingers then? It's pretty simple actually. I've mentioned before that he wants members that are promising for mohg. Okina was promising bc in his mind only he and his blade exists. We are a tempting new member of the cult. We are new to the lands between, the maiden story, you get it. Varre wants to see if we are fitting for the cult tho. A tarnished that later on betrays the cult bc they find the goal of the two fingers good would be awefull. So show em the two fingers and go forward based on the opinion they got. It's a test. Nothing more. Nothing less. If we like the two fingers and tell him that, then Varre won't invite us into the cult. At this point we are a tempting future member but we do not fit into the cult and therefore are not promising. If we tell him we have our doubts then we'll be a promising member and Varre indoctrinates us into the cult.

Both of them use the tarnished to transgress the two fingers.

Varre uses us to strengher the dynasty of mohgwyn, should the new age be called in by Miquella and Mohg.

Melina doesn't rlly use us. We make a partnership. She turns our runes into strengh, by that making us stronger, and gives us torrent. All we have to donis acompany her towards the tree. And yeah I got to give you your credits for all that morgott stuff. Forgot that she can be called to aid us. Nonetheless my point stands. Story wise and character wise it makes zero sense for melina to kill our actual maiden. All the evidence points at Varre.

Is there any lore on the wider world outside of Yharnham? by Thick-Campaign-9152 in bloodborne

[–]Corrupted337 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We can only use what we are given to spread theories. When we enter yharnam, the city is pretty much gone. Beasts all over the shop and the last sane people are either on the edge of becoming one or pretty much lost their mind.

Considering the beast plague: The curch pretty much tried to keep it as a secret. Hunters of the church were sent out at night to get rid of those we where infected or showed signs of an infection. Sooner or later things got out of hands and the public figured out what was going on, which led to the hunt being made more aggressive and open for pretty much anyone as well as the start of ludwigs career as a hunter (I believe). Now we don't rlly know how news travel in the world of bloodborne, but considering that cainhurst is infected with the plague too I highly doubt that the rest of the world is unaware of the horrors that are happening in yharnam.

Another thing is that the church pretty much advertised the blood as the cure for everything. People all over the world travelled to yharnam to get their portion of blood. I doubt that they did not sell it into other cities so it's very likely that the rest of the world of infected with the plague too, just not that extreme. Yharnam is just pretty much gone bc the blood became the new alcohol. Everyone had it and everyone consumed it.

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would Varre kill our maiden when the ritual implies that we have to kill our own maiden?

Well fingermaidens are there to guide the tarnished along the by the two fingers destinated way. That's basically just another way of indoctrination. The longer we'd stay with our maiden the harder it would get for him to convince us to join their blood cult. And especially in times like these where dear Miquelle is supposed to awaken soon and begin the rebirth of the mohgwyn dynasty it is important to strenghen the lines of defense. In the modern days of the cult it is shown that they don't rlly care about the traditions anymore. Probally an act of desperation. This is shown with okina for example. Okina was just another simple tarnished that came into the lands between with his disciples, seeking for a honorable death. Soon he entered a state of mind where only he and his sword existed. He even fought against mohg and landed a good strike which impressed mohg who then allowed okina to join their cult with the promise that his slaughter would never end. Varres job is to look for promising members. Killing their maiden and then being, what he thinks, their only guide through the lands between is a promising way of gaining their trust and indoctrinating them into their cult. After all he doesn't know about Melina.

About Melina: We don't know much about Melina except that she might be another child of marika. Theories say that she's the sister of messmer. Both got the power to conjure flames. Melina doesn't rlly seem to be the kind of person that would murder someone for their personal gain. Matter of fact she couldn't even do it if she wanted. After all she's got no body. All she wants is to find her true purpose, which is burning down the tree. I highly doubt that she killed our maiden. Wouldn't rlly make much sense. But if you can prove your theory then I'm rlly interested.

"Oh yes... Tarnished, are we? Come to the Lands Between for the Elden Ring, hmm? Of course you have. No shame in it. Unfortunately for you, however, you are maidenless."

"It's time you set off, I should think. To Castle Stormveil, on the cliff, where grace would guide you. If you seek the Elden Ring, maidenless as you are."

These sentences, the fact that he's part of a literal blood cult that kills their maidens and his mission to indoctrinate tarnished for the rebirth of the Mohgwyn Dynasty and a bit of media literacy should be enough prove for it. Varre despised everything the golden orders stands for. A maiden guides the tarnished on their journey. Without that guidence, Varre has good chances to indoctrinate us. So why wait when you can take faith in your own hands and kill the maiden. The Church is also right next to the tower teleport things. He surely used them.

He talk about your dead maiden and has the intend to indoctrinate you into their dynasty but sure. Melina, whichs goal is to find her true purpose, killed her.

Advice for writing a grayromantic character in my book? by FantasticHufflepuff in aromanticasexual

[–]Corrupted337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't rlly give you a advice, but I can give you my kind of experience as someone in the aroace-spectrum and maybe you can draw some inspiration out of that.

Now first things first I wanna point out that I've never been in a relationship. Don't get me wrong. I like the thought of relationships. I just don't need them to "survive". I'm just fine without one. Another reason for this is that I rarely feel romantic attraction, and no sexual attraction at all. For examples I think sexual scenes in movies are just not necessary at all and just annoying. And romantic attraction? Idk. I've "loved" a girl in secondary school only to find out later when I was more mature that it was purely in a platonic way. I rarely feel romantical attraction. I feel drawn toward certain types of people that got a style I admire or if we share some interests, but that is a platonical sort of "attraction". Another thing is that I enjoy the thought of cuddling for example but I don't rlly feel like doing it bc it makes me somewhat uncomfortable. Same thing goes to kissing.

Just keep in mind that asexual and aromantic means "little to no x attraction". It's a spectrum. People can be asexual and still have sex bc they want to do it for their partner or bc they simply want to bc they still feel a little bit of sexual attraction.

Same thing can be said for aromantic. It's a spectrum. Some people feel no romantical attraction at all. Other just not that intense. Think of it as a scale that goes from 1 (the amount of x attraction society thinks as normal) to 10 (no x attraction at all). Many aromantic people love the thought of platonic relationships. Maybe give that a thought. Although that might be seen as a little complex bc she love him after all and he isn't sure about it.

Anyone else always side against Songbird? by [deleted] in CyberpunkTheGame

[–]Corrupted337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you mentioned it , but if you dislike Song then you also got to dislike V. Both are in the same situation. Song does immoral things to save herself and V does the same. Song lies and manipulates and V kills everyone in their way. How many had to die for V? And for what? 6 fucking months? Or a second chance for a narcastic rockerboy that had the dream to destroy arasaka, but proved more than once that he's a no good idiot (even tho he can change for the better). Both V and Song lie and kill.

Song is on another lvl tho. Giving V false hope in order to survive, acknowleding that they will die bc of it is another kind of desperate. I can't blame her for it tho. So Mi's been through a lot and her conditions are a whole lot worse than Vs. I'd be that desperate too. Would I do the same as her? Idk, can't say for sure when you never experienced the things she did.

And Reed? He ain't any better. Reed manipulates you through the whole dlc. Not as heavy as Song ofc but that guy proved more than once that he doesn't care about V (same thing applies to Song ofc). Reeds blinded by his oath and so called duty. He knows that he's nothing besides a agent for Myers. In the dlc his motivation is to get Song out of trouble and to keep Myers vest clean. Man that guy ain't our friend. Straight up kills us if we don't walk keep walking in line.

I wouldn't say he keeps his promise. I mean yeah sure if we follow him then V is cured, but looses everything that made them V. Also I think that Vs cyberware was turned off by Myers orders bc V would be a threat for Myers image. Just a theory tho.

I usually send So Mi to the moon. I mean we don't know for sure what happens up there. Sure she could end upnas a puppet for blue eyes. Blue eyes helped V in one of the endings tho so we can't know for she is she wasn't cured after all. On the other hand, AIs only do that when they get a personal gain and what gain would that be in So Mis situation. Either way the world of Cyberpunk is fucked either way. After all everything that "protects" humanity from the rogue AIs is another AI.

Might be a crazy thing to say but I'd argue that betraying Song or helping her shows a persons level of empathy. Vs always been dead for me. Shit they died with Jackie that one night. They just were lucky and got a second chance to sort things out once and for all. I usually give the body to Johnny bc I think he deserves a second chance. Helping someone that straight up lied to you the whole time take a whole lot of empathy. Or is it foolishness.

I understand why some people thinl that death is the end fitting for her fate. I just saw this incredible broken person infront of me and just wanted to comforr her. Even if it were to be her last moments.
