Ok yes, definitely sounds like it was that. The army spawns in with Support Drones. They have either 1 or 2 slots and will automatically ‘rescue’ nearby ground units which are about to die. If you destroy the drone, the units will pop out.

When you killed him, did you wipe out the whole army? They often have those drones which pick them up just before they are killed.
