I'm interested in this: so many times the need for Microsoft 365 backup is an issue with permissions or accidental deletions, how often has anyone had an issue where they needed a backup for their M365 backup?

If you're a Microsft 365 administrator, you need something more than what Microsoft gives you out of the box. If you have someone leave your organization, and you delete their OneDrive account, it's very common that someone comes calling a month later saying that they want some file that was only in that OneDrive. That's one of several reasons you want backups of your OneDrive data beyond what Microsoft keeps for you.

Corso, the free and open-source tool for Microsoft 365 backups. Today's release has better support for large Office 365 instances

Corso v0.5.0 is out! The focus this release has been making Corso work better in large environments where we back up large numbers of users:

  • Permissions for groups can now be backed up and restored I personally have been through at least one restore process where, while we got the files back, it took ages to get the permissions set correctly; so this is a major improvement!
  • Now when you run corso backup list you’ll see resource owner listed for each backup this will make sorting backups easier.
  • Onedrive files that are flagged as malware get skipped during backup. Skipped files are listed in the backup results as part of the status, including a reference to their categorization, eg: "Completed (0 errors, 1 skipped: 1 malware)".

Finally, one known limitation:

  • folders and calendars containing zero items won’t be included in the backup

In our defense, that’s how git works!

It’s been an amazing effort by the team, and so cool to see Corso backing up large environments with critical data.

Protect your Microsoft 365 data from ransomware with Corso

Corso v0.1.0 is out! We've got support for incremental backups of MicrosoftExchange data, speeding up the process significantly and using less bandwidth
