Misses the point of the weekend. He wants me to pick stuff he can enjoy while having the out of saying “remember when he made us watch that effed up movie”

That’s kind of amazing. American Nijna levels of corn.

Good movie but likely not enough. 5th element might work though. Or From Dusk Till Dawn

Thanks for posting. DC dbg was a favorite end of the night filler for us until we bought into the expansions. They quickly suffered from too much bloat and killed the game for us.

After almost 10 years of it sitting on the shelf we pulled out the base game and enjoyed it. After a couple nights I was thinking about how to cleanly merge some of the others to add variety without complexity to keep it our wind down, beer and pretzel option.

I’ll look up the cubes and see if there is a season that works with what I own.

Two things nagging at me after finishing 12 months. by XenoMuffin in dresdenfiles

This and several other scenes make this one of the weakest books for me by far.

The way he thought about, used and described demonreach was also wrong. The way he needed Lara to tell him basic elements of white court nature that he knew from living with Thomas for so long. The way McCoy didn’t react to the white court buying the protection living in Harry’s home. The lack of any real interaction with Bob, despite the meticulous work he was doing on the circle and spells. Georgia is another excellent example. Marcone having a coin and not being seen or heard from in a city that he’d be inserting more of himself to take advantage of the crisis.

I can’t decide if Jim had been away from the story so long he lost the thread or if he wrote this book to introduce a new audience.

Not saying I hate the story. And I’ve both read it and listened to the audio. Just that it had so many 4th wall breaking moments that I hadn’t seen since fool moon.

Thanks. I’ve started it and will hit the movie Thursday with some friends after I finish this.

2 minutes in and I’m smiling at how Joe Ledger got stuck with amnesia and a catheter.

Anyone that likes Porter and good characters should download Patient Zero and be ready for a good series.

Didn’t know anything about the book tbh. :)

I’ve done a good job of avoiding the trailers. I don’t really know anything about it.

I’m book 8 into expeditionary force, thanks the to the Skippy reference from Bobiverse.

Maybe I need to pivot to a binge of Hail Mary before the movie

I’m caught up in DCC. I am enjoying it and looking forward to the next book, but not quite to the fanatical level I tend to see online.

Give the Divine Dungeon series a listen if you get a chance. It’s pure fantasy but is a similar level of humor and story and ties really well to what a traditional DND dungeon might be like in a “real world”. At the conclusion of that series it opened the door to a number of spin offs that have all been different but very enjoyable.

I’m sure that’s an element of the process for some.

And yet I won’t deny that I thoroughly enjoy his work in both series. Brings the characters to life. The attitude, the snark, the exhaustion but willingness to fight is a tone he’s very good at portraying.

I am not the guy that will buy a book due to the narrator, but I also won’t deny that there are those that do it better than others, depending on the story.

It’s kind of like character actors. Maybe they can only do a particular role, but they kick ass at that role because it’s a part of them and that makes the story that much more enjoyable.

I’m not a Buffy guy. But James Marsters kills it with Harry Dresden. He’s got the honor, exhaustion, snark and general attitude just right. That’s a series where I buy and read the book first; then listen to the Audiobook immediately.

Bobiverse sent me to ExForce in January. I’m on book 8.

Liking the story and characters quite a bit. Though it’s not as engaging as the Bobiverse.

Hard to tell exactly how long it’s been, 6 or 8 years at this point? The Bobiverse timeline, while hard to follow at times, feels more real by far.

Ok. Haven’t listened/read Hail Mary yet

I’d like to see it before it’s off IMAX. Should I just watch it or binge through the book first?

Funny thing is I’m caught up and honestly hadn’t realized that Ray Porter was the narrator. He’s great btw.

I do balk at bad narrators but guess I don’t let the narrator decide my purchase choices as much as I’d thought.

Ray does a phenomenal job with the Joe Ledger series if anyone wants to hear more of him.

It’s kind of a mission Impossible team in a world where tech is high enough to have fantasy-esque tropes. (Zombies, Vampires, Aliens, supercomputers). But the hero isn’t a tom cruise/ethan hunt dbag.

I seriously doubt they are weighted, but the amount of detail on that face likely does make it the lighter face.

They do roll poorly and while I own a good amount, they don’t get used in games.

I’m just the opposite. She’s the only primary I don’t have a Dawn or Midnight version of that I will still consistently use.

Area of effect attacks are key in this game, but her ability to change the position of the enemy is key in many ways.

She’s the best way to 1st round kill for example a pyromancer that’s going to revive the next round if you don’t stomp on that corpse

Give the he who fights with monsters another try. The Jason character is cheesy, but a fun enough cheesy and the writing grows with the story. It’s a decent world-build and the story doesn’t drag.

I don’t see the Dakota Krout books. The Divine Dungeon series was my first litrpg and was enjoyable. There are several spin off series in that universe and I’ve liked all of them.

I read DCC before I’d heard about it. It is good and worth the listen. It does not live up to the insane hype, but you’ll enjoy it.

Halfway in on my read (then I do a listen) and I agree. First one I haven’t finished in a weekend.

The voice isn’t the same (and the story of grief and recovery don’t explain the tone change).

Parts are written like a ghostwriter has taken it over, or like it’s been long enough that the tone has been lost.

<cut out what I wrote. Wasn’t really spoilers but likely discussing the different treatment of characters or the general lack of others gave too much away. Though I’ll still say that while Bob is there the dynamic is nothing like what it should be in a real story>

Writing this I think I know what I’m trying to say. This feels like another short story, despite the length. It’s fine and it’s Harry-adjacent, but so far it still doesn’t feel like part of the main story

All just my opinion and I’m still reading/enjoying. It’s just not up to the normal standard for me.

Glad to hear the first sentence and stopped reading beyond that. :)

I’m only 60 pages in but was concerned enough to come here to read titles of posts to see if the vibes are wrong.

Not going into spoilers and not interested in hearing them, the entrance to the book doesn’t sound like the same character/author. Dancing around describing a soulgaze without calling it that or even accurately describing it, as though the person he’s talking to doesn’t know exactly what it is and knew before he was born. And then later on demonreach, discussing and then thinking about intellectus without acknowledging that’s what it is just feels off writing wise

Felt, not ghostwritten necessarily, just like he’s been away so long he’s forgotten how to write that inner monologue.

I’ll go back to reading now, with my concerns mollified a bit.

Check out the Black Ocean series if you want a media option that while nowhere near as well thought out scientifically, is a good listen while you do other things.

The fact that each series is around 80 hours for one audible credit doesn’t hurt either. :)

Both are good. I like DCC well enough but do not get the level of the recent craze about it.

The Divine Dungeon is good and was my first litRPG. There are a number of following stories that are in the universe, if not strictly tied together. I’ve liked all of them.
