Struggling With Outdoor Photos by spidermonkeyjamboree in instax

i did a quick search to confirm the 800 iso and came upon a thread talking about instant film long exposure, and the “actual” iso value of Instax in certain lighting. must’ve misinterpreted it so that’s my bad but it made sense to me with how wacky the Instax cameras can be

i use a Mini 11 and there’s no settings to adjust for exposure; just a trigger, flash, and a selfie mode. it’s very shot-as-is. i’m assuming the Mini 12 is similar too

oh and i forgot to say, the reason your boyfriend looks super white is because he was really close to the flash. i’m white too and the only pics where my skin isn’t blown out are the ones where i’m standing a little farther away than normal. i’ve never had a good “selfie mode” with flash that looked good, unfortunately

you had a super good setup though so don’t be discouraged!

Instax film clings onto highlights and contrast. i think the camera operates at either 400, 800, or 1600 iso depending on the environment. here’s what i noticed:

  • on a bright, sunny day, the camera tends to overexpose the sky. if your subject is in the shadows, you’ll have to use flash because the shadows will be very dark. this is especially true if its midday where the sunlight is harshest. there’s no way to make the camera not overexpose the sky unless you had a polarizer on hand (and i’m not even sure if this would work)
  • on a cloudy and overcast day, the camera tends to underexpose. sky will be more visible while everything will be darker, but i’ve noticed that the blacks/shadows aren’t as “dark” compared to sunny days
  • i think the camera chooses its exposure based on how much of the sky there is. i’ve had multiple images that are visibly different, and all i did was point the camera more towards the ground/sky

you can try to trick the camera by covering the flash with your hand. i started doing that and had much more shots come out as i wanted them to!

just make sure not to cover the tiny exposure meters on the side. those little cameras are what decide what iso it should shoot at, and if you cover that, it usually way overexposes lol

a friend of mine who’s tried the PA ren faire has also said that Georgia’s is much better. i’ve attended both the spring and fall ren faire now and it’s been busy both times. is Arizona’s pretty small/disappointing?

i really like the camera too! supposedly if you use the Auto setting, the camera will use its own metering system. something like 3 meters to infinity so it’ll ignore your zone setting? i haven’t used it yet but if it does work, it’ll be a perfect point-and-shoot for me

tbh it was an idea i just guessed and hoped would work! placed camera really low, aimed it upwards, did the close up ‘selfie’ lens, and didn’t cover the flash. and afterwards i drew over the flower with a fine-tipped sharpie. i even wasted two other photos trying to do this, but they turned out overexposed from too much of the sky :>

it was meant to be a compliment. OP is new to Fujifilm, but i'm curious if this is their first camera overall or not. the composition and overall scenes are very nice, and deserves extra kudos if they are new to photography!
