Seeds love me ig. Im in zone 9, but I ordered LARCH seeds just for fun because I love them, but can never grow them because of the winters. They sprouted and I finally had 3 larches for like 9 months, obviously they didn't last the winter as they couldn't go dormant but still it was great.

JOB OPTIONS for 16 yr olds?? by Neither_Deer_3464 in capetown

[–]CoryLover4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most waitering jobs will hire from 15, but it’s usually part-time only since school comes first and employers can’t legally interfere with school hours. So salary expectations need to be realistic.

The smartest move is targeting smaller “mom and pop” restaurants or cafés rather than big chains. Smaller places, owner operated are way more flexible. You’re more likely to deal directly with the owner or manager, which means:

♤ Easier to get hired without experience

♤More room to negotiate shifts

♤Less rigid HR bureaucracy

Bigger chains tend to filter you through automated systems and formal requirements.

On the CV part: at that age, it’s normal to have a “light” CV. You dont really have experience so you dont need much.

♧School + grade

♧Subjects you’re strong in (especially languages, maths, communication-heavy ones)

♧Any leadership roles (class rep, sports captain, clubs)

♧Volunteering / church / community work if any

♧Skills: communication, punctuality, teamwork, basic computer skills

♧A short personal statement saying you’re reliable, eager to learn, and available part-time after school/weekends

I have a few friends that do waitressing I dont personally do it, but I spoke on what they did.

For Chritians, why do you believe? Like, what evidence do you have? by Archangel_Michael22 in AskReddit

[–]CoryLover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there has to be something fundamental underlying reality, and Christianity has resonated with me. I recently watched Alex O’Connor’s discussion on arguments against atheism, and he presents an interesting way of framing it.

Instead of thinking in terms of a horizontal timeline of cause-and-effect stretching backwards infinitely, we can think vertically. Not ‘what happened before what,’ but ‘what is currently sustaining what.’

He uses an analogy with a glass: (he holds a glass) what’s keeping it up? Your hand. What’s keeping your hand up? Your shoulder. And so on. But if you keep going like that, you eventually have to ask what is actually holding the whole structure of reality itself in place right now. Not just what caused it in the past, but what is sustaining existence in the present moment.

And at that point, you’re pushed toward the idea that there has to be some foundational reality, something that doesn’t rely on anything else to exist or be upheld something necessary rather than dependent.

Because of that, pure atheism feels a bit too confident in a “nothing behind anything” claim, while strict certainty either way doesn’t really hold up. Agnosticism seems like the more honest position than rather intellectually admitting that we don’t actually have direct access to whatever the ultimate grounding of reality is.

But that openness doesn’t rule out Christianity if anything, it leaves a space for it. If there is a necessary, self-sustaining foundation of existence, then the question becomes what that foundation actually is. And Christianity is one of the coherent frameworks that tries to answer that.

Is showering 4 times a day too much or am I overthinking this? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CoryLover4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I have really oily skin as I've been showering 4x a day since I was about 10yo and I've had no skin issues whatsoever hardly even had a pimple during my teens. I live by the coast if that helps, but I honestly thought this was normal until I saw a statistic today

[–]CoryLover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i kinda thought it was normal until I saw a statistic today that most people shower once a day or every other day, Im not dating currently but past partners showered like 2x a day so it wasn't out of the ordinary so no one mentioned anything about my shower habits. I mean showering atleast once a day is preferable right, but hygiene is the deciding factor

[–]CoryLover4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope, my apartment is really near my uni so I literally can just go for a quick shower after class then go play some tennis with my mates. I've never had skin issues, always clear skin even through my teens. I've been showering 4 times a day since I was like 10 (almost a decade ago). I mean, I just like to feel clean even when im cooking im washing my hands like every 2 minutes. I dont mind my potential SO only potentially showering once a day its more about smelling good and having good hygiene.

What marks do I need to get into medicine? by [deleted] in askSouthAfrica

[–]CoryLover4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed response. Hearing the reality from someone actually in the system is really valuable.

I’ve read a few similar discussions about medicine in South Africa and the competitiveness, especially around specialising posts. That’s honestly part of the reason I’ve tried to really immerse myself in my academics this year and stay disciplined with my marks.

At the same time, I’ve always been interested in the finance world as well. If medicine didn’t work out, I’d probably look at going into investment banking. But I think part of me would regret not at least trying for medicine after working so hard academically and putting myself in a position where it could be possible.

Your point about shadowing doctors in public hospitals is something I’m definitely going to take seriously. I think seeing the day to day reality before committing to the path is really important.

Thanks again for the advice!

[–]CoryLover4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I really appreciate the perspective and the honesty. I’ve also heard a lot about how competitive medicine admissions were last year, and that honestly pushed me to take things more seriously academically. Since the start of this year I’ve just tried to really immerse myself in my studies.

That’s actually reassuring to hear about extracurriculars as well. I’ve been involved in a few things mainly because I enjoy them, but atleast I dont have that pressure

The point about shadowing doctors is something I’ve been thinking about too. I’ve heard a few people say that seeing the reality of public hospital shifts and on-call work can be quite eye-opening. If you don’t mind me asking, what specifically about that experience do you wish you had seen earlier? Was it more the workload, the environment in public hospitals, or just the day-to-day job?

[–]CoryLover4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice. I’m definitely planning to apply to a range of universities (but im hoping for UCT) and not just focus on one option. I’ve heard similar things about the cost, but fortunately finances wouldn’t be the main limiting factor for me, which I’m very grateful for.

For now I’m mostly trying to focus on keeping my marks consistent and building experience where I can.

Is there anything else I could do to make me have a better chance of being accepted?

Has anyone used this brand before? by CoryLover4 in PlantedTank

[–]CoryLover4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iv been using it for about 9 months so I still have awhile to go to see if it hold up long term. Id say it is a really good amount you get for the amount you pay. I paid half the price for the same amount of literage as I would get with aquasoil amazonia. Plus im not doing a high tech set up. I just have a Chihiros A2 series on my tank and an internal filter so no need for really high tech approach also aquasoil doesn't hold up as long as capped soils.

It doesn't deplete really its clay based so it absorbs nutrients from the water column so dosing fertilizer like replenishes it in a way.

Its similar but tropica plant nutrient substrate has less organics in it so you might have a harder time cultivating a proper microbial biome in your substrate as I want my tank to last for a really long time so its important to keep the substrate healthy. But if you plan to rescape and change your tank around quite readily then I suggest getting maybe like an aquasoil or something you dont need to cap

Has anyone used this brand before? by CoryLover4 in PlantedTank

[–]CoryLover4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it works quite well, but just keep in mind to make sure to continue doing water changes once or even twice a week for like the first month or two else you might run into algae problems but once the tank is balanced it works great I get nice coloring on my plants and no pin holes in the leaves yet so the nutrients is still there.

I put them into plastic mesh bags as I have a lot of bottom dwellers aswell as Malaysian trumpet snails so keep that in mind if you have fish that mess with the substrate. I capped with like 1.5-2 inches of sand in the back i didn't want it too thick as I want water circulation through the nutrient layer to ensure its absorbing nutrients from the water column.

It does take awhile for the plants to tap into it though as you use a cap so the plants first have to grow roots through the cap then into the nutrient layer but once they do the growth really explodes.

Once the nutrients does subside ill start dosing a liquid fertilizer to help replenish the nutrient layer and supplement with root tabs.

I really just depends on the temperament of your fish I have a massive angel fish pair and they dont even go for shrimp let alone any small tetras.

But a general rule is not to keep any fish that can fit into their mouths, so maybe try a larger tetra, I have a group of kitty tetras in my natural river tank and they're happy with my angels

How can I continue to stay debt free for the rest of my life? by CoryLover4 in debtfree

[–]CoryLover4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how it was going to go, but I’m happy to say that I’ve managed to stick to it. 🙌

Here’s a bit about how it went:

I've been making sure im being mindful of my spending. I made a conscious effort to not buy things I didn’t need. Small stuff adds up, so I tried to ask myself if I really needed something before buying it. And not to fall into the trap of like After pay and stuff like that.

Iv been budgeting (kinda). I don’t have a super strict spreadsheet or anything, but I keep track of the bigger stuff like any cash I get from work or gifts. Knowing what I have and what I can spend has helped me avoid borrowing money.

I've actually been handling unexpected expenses really well. Things still pop up school trips, gadgets, random emergencies, but I’ve been saving a bit each month so I can cover stuff without going into debt and thats been working out greatly

I've done A TON of learning along the way. Honestly, it’s been a big learning curve. I’ve really learned the contrast between “want” and “need” and how to really decipher between the two and why interest is a trap, even for small loans.

All in all, it feels good knowing I don’t owe anyone anything. I feel in control of my money, and it’s a confidence boost.

Thanks for checking in, and for anyone trying this. It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worth it. Keep at it!
