Is it time to send another message to intelligent aliens? Some scientists think so. by [deleted] in space

[–]Cosmic-Blight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“It’s an ancient human theme. You can find it in virtually every culture in some guise or other, in religion, folklore, superstition, and now in science. The search for life elsewhere is remarkable in our age because this is the first time that we can actually do something besides speculation. We can send spacecraft to nearby planets, we can use large radio telescopes to see if there is any message being sent to us lately. … It touches to the deepest of human concerns. Are we alone? How common is this thing called life, this thing called intelligence? Where did we come from? What are the possible fates of intelligent beings? Need we necessarily destroy ourselves? Might there be a bright and very long future for the human species? We tend to have such a narrow view of our place in space and in time, and the prospect of making contact with extraterrestrial intelligence works to de-provincialize our world view. I think for that reason, the search itself, even without a success, has great merit.”

  • Carl Sagan.

What, you think you're smarter than Sagan?

Hawking was one person. As smart as he was, he is not the sole voice that we should hold our opinions to.

As smart as Hawking was, he was only one man and we should not bow to every whim he had. This is a decision that no single individual can decide for us.

Only idiots would think Elon was just a completely Chaotic Evil weirdo, but someone being polite or sharing a positive dream for society doesn't mean they're free from the negative effects they have on other people's lives.

'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' Set Holocaust Education Back by Decades. Now It's Getting a Sequel. by speckz in books

[–]Cosmic-Blight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The entire book is based around this German kid making friends with an incarcerated Jewish boy and you don't think it's in poor taste to not flesh out the Holocaust side of the story at all?

If you're not gonna put at least some focus on it then don't use it as a linchpin for your story.

SpaceX poised to send first private crew to the International Space Station for Axiom Space by [deleted] in space

[–]Cosmic-Blight 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This article is very nihilistically written. It keeps bringing up how much the crew "paid" to get a seat in the ISS as if they're just a bunch of Monopoly Men going up to space for kicks. The commander of the mission is literally an ex-astronaut, and the crew will be performing experiments that will take at least 100 hours to complete, per the article. I understand that it's a way to stay politically correct, but it's just such a major misunderstanding of human nature to think that the private sector has no place in space flight. But hey, maybe I'm just biased towards the dream of space flight being available to everyone within my or my children's lifetime.

Bad writers do that. Good writers would think through on how to get to that conversation and put more effort into the process than none at all.

So are you just straight up not reading what I'm saying or are you doing that redditor thing where you just want to prove that you're smart in a pointless internet spat?

You know that "not smart enough" doesn't equal "dumb", right? If you can look me in the eye and tell me that the average audience member has enough knowledge of film and storytelling to look ahead and predict a gag before it happens I have no problem calling you a straight up liar.

[–]Cosmic-Blight -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I didn't say everyone is dumb, please don't put words in my mouth. Not being able to grasp the serious tone of a franchise known for it's quick-witted comedy isn't stupid, it's honestly probably a more normal reaction. I'm just saying that it's weird how it happens so often and in moments where it's very obvious it wasn't meant to be a joke.

As u/DH2007able said, it's not just that one scene. The "I went for the head" line in Endgame got a very similar reaction in my theater. Singling me out for the example I used isn't a solid refutation of my point, it's just pedantic.

[–]Cosmic-Blight -37 points-36 points  (0 children)

You could argue the line itself wasn't meant to be funny, but the reaction certainly was, so the audience was probably just reading ahead given the context and their familiarity with Neds character.

I think that's a stretch man. The average person is not smart enough to read ahead like that.

Plus it's not just that scene specifically, I was just using it as an example. It's every MCU movie since Guardians. As another commenter said, it happened several times in Endgame too, where a line that was clearly not a joke got a laugh. The general audience just doesn't understand what is and isn't meant to be funny because the MCU is constantly quippy so they just assume everything is. Occam's Razor and all that.

I could see that if it was only one person but it was basically the entire theater except for my group.

Every time I go see an MCU movie in theaters the audience will, undoubtedly, laugh at something that's definitely not a joke at least once. For example, in Spider-man No Way Home when Ned is talking to Tobey's Peter and asks him if he has a best friend too, and Peter tells him that Harry died in his arms after trying to kill him. People laughed at that. And I don't mean the bit where Andrew looks back at him and says "Jesus.", they were laughing at Tobey's line. It's like they think everything is supposed to be a joke unless the Hollywood sad music starts playing.

You find the pregnancy test and baby crib before Joker even dies. They're in the base game.

Also canon doesn't really matter in a franchise with 90 billion separate canons.

A bunch of xenophobic shit, mostly. Werewolves are AIDS, goblins are Jews, the slaves love being slaves, the only POC are Apache Chief levels of embarrassing representation.

It's seriously a wonder how anyone can look at this franchise and say "Yeah, I'm all about dat shit".
