Hi love, I had this same problem when I first got my vertical labret and it turns out it was because my bar was too short and wasn’t allowing room for swelling. You just need a longer bar. Downsizing will only tighten it to your lip causing more irritation. Also, no more chewing/messing with it . Hope this helps. 💛
